General Index Limited in Houston, TX is seeking a Data Analyst to develop expertise in commodity trading and price assessment, supporting our mission to deliver trusted benchmark data to industry leaders.

You'll work with the product and markets teams to build assessment algorithms, transform trade and pricing data with Python and SQL, ensure data quality, and help scale tools as GX grows.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
  • Three+ years of professional experience with commodity markets data.
  • Strong numerical ability and understanding of multivariate statistics.
  • Excellent Python programming skills; Python aptitude testing will be part of the process.
  • Experience integrating AI into workflows (Claude Code preferred).
  • Proficient in building complex SQL queries and Excel analyses.
  • Team player comfortable working with global teams to achieve objectives.

Data Analyst

We are looking for a Data Analyst, based in Houston, United States, to develop expertise in commodity trading and price assessment and support General Index's mission of delivering trusted benchmark data to industry leaders including Bloomberg, BP, and ExxonMobil.

General Index (GX) delivers future-proof commodity prices. About the role

GX is seeking a full-time, Houston-based, Data Analyst to join the Product team.

  • Learn and understand the basics of commodity trading and the price assessment process.
  • Work with the technical and markets teams to develop the assessment algorithms that underpin new and existing price benchmarks
  • Build new tools and processes to support the business as it grows
  • Provide operational and QA support for daily assessment processes
  • Build and support processes to clean and normalize market data from our market sources

Typical daily activities will include:

  • Working with the markets team to capture requirements and implement price assessment algorithms
  • Configuring pipelines within our core system to implement assessment processes
  • Developing Python scripts and SQL queries to transform new trade and pricing data sources into our internal, normalized format
  • Working with the markets team to support the daily assessment and QA processes
About you
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, preferred
  • Three or more years professional experience working with commodity markets data, preferred
  • High level of numerical ability required, including strong familiarity with multivariate statistics
  • Accuracy and attention to detail, and a solid appreciation of willingness to understand how this position’s responsibilities impact the business
  • Solid Python programming experience, required. Python aptitude testing is part of the hiring process
  • Understanding and passion for integrating AI into work processes, required. Experience with Claude Code, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrable experience building complex SQL queries preferred
  • Highly proficient working with Excel
  • Teamworking skills, with the ability to work with the business to develop and implement technical solutions to improve operations
  • Desire and ability to work with global teams to accomplish shared objectives
  • Strong interest in commodity markets
  • This is a full-time role, based in Houston, TX, with a four-day-per-week (Monday-Thursday) in-office requirement. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position
