Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems seeks a Principal / Senior Principal Systems Engineer - Data Analyst to join our engineering analytics and tools development team. You will collaborate with analytics leads to develop data processing and visualization solutions for aerospace and defense missions.

The role can be filled at Level 3 or Level 4 depending on experience, with preferred capabilities in data pipelines, Django web development, Tableau BI tools, CI/CD practices, and active DoD

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 5+ years in Systems Eng, Data Analytics, Data Eng or Data Science.
  • Master’s with 3+ years or PhD with 1+ year also acceptable.
  • Python programming with large codebases; SQL/database design; ETL; Git; data visualization.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret and SAP clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Translate questions into data and analytical requirements with cross‑functional teams.
  • Architect modular, scalable data processing and analytics tools with version control.
  • Design end‑to‑end data solutions: ingestion, modeling, analytics, reporting.
  • Develop intuitive user interfaces for data entry and interaction.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends and anomalies.
  • Communicate insights to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Document data processes and support integration into workflows.

About The Role

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal / Senior Principal Systems Engineer - Data Analyst to join our engineering analytics and tools development team. In this individual contributor role, you will collaborate closely with data analytics leads and cross-functional teams to understand complex problem spaces and develop innovative data processing and visualization solutions. This position offers the opportunity to work on high-impact projects that support our aerospace and defense missions, leveraging your expertise in data analytics, engineering, and software development. The role can be filled at either level 3 or level 4, depending on experience and qualifications.

Qualifications
For Principal Systems Engineer (Level 3)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with a minimum of 5 years of professional or military experience in Systems Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Engineering, or Data Science.
  • Alternatively, a Master’s degree in a STEM field with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. with 1 year of experience.
  • Proficiency in Python programming, including experience with large codebases.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design and advanced SQL skills.
  • Experience with data pipelines (ETL processes) and version control systems such as Git.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including exploratory data analysis, trend detection, and anomaly identification.
  • Ability to create compelling data visualizations and communicate insights effectively.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance and SAP clearance.
For Senior Principal Systems Engineer (Level 4)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s with 6 years, or a Ph.D. with 4 years of experience.
  • All other qualifications as listed above.

Preferred qualifications include experience designing data pipelines, web development skills (especially with Django), proficiency with BI tools like Tableau, familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, and active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearances.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with technical and programmatic teams to understand their questions and translate them into clear data and analytical requirements.
  • Architect and develop modular, scalable data processing and analytics tools, adhering to established coding standards and version-control practices.
  • Design and implement end-to-end data solutions, including data ingestion, parsing, relational data modeling, analytics, and reporting.
  • Create intuitive user interfaces that facilitate accurate and efficient data entry, review, and interaction.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends, outliers, and anomalies in engineering and business data.
  • Synthesize findings into clear, actionable insights tailored for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to continuously improve data analytics capabilities and tools.
  • Maintain documentation of data processes, models, and visualizations to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
  • Support integration of data solutions into existing workflows and systems, ensuring robustness and scalability.
