Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Dance, Dance Education, Performing Arts, Education, or related field, or equivalent training.
  • Professional experience in dance education with proficiency in multiple styles.
  • 3+ years teaching in school, community, or youth settings.
  • Experience in Title I Schools.
  • 2-3 years working with students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for a wide range of abilities.
  • Experience teaching in NYC public schools preferred.
  • Strong classroom management, engagement, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Availability during NYC public school hours.
  • Fingerprint clearance by NYC Department of Education or willing to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead weekly Discover Dance residency sessions in NYC public schools.
  • Teach grade-appropriate dance lessons through movement, choreography, creative exploration, and dance appreciation.
  • Implement the Discover Dance curriculum with adaptive instruction.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and school staff to support diverse learners.
  • Prepare students for live performances and post-performance learning experiences.
  • Participate in trainings, curriculum meetings, planning meetings, and professional development.
  • Communicate with 92NY staff, teachers, and school partners.
  • Arrive prepared for each residency and manage program materials and equipment.
  • Complete required program documentation by deadlines.

Job Summary

92NY School Engagement in the Arts brings arts residencies, performances, and learning experiences to thousands of K-12 students and educators across New York City each year.

We are seeking experienced dance educators to lead Discover Dance residencies in NYC public schools. Through movement, choreography, creative exploration, and performance, students build confidence, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and an appreciation for dance as an expressive art form.

This role includes teaching from the Discover Dance curriculum and preparing students for live performances by world-renowned dance companies. Candidates should be comfortable adapting instruction for students with a wide range of learning needs in collaboration with classroom teachers and school staff.

Assignments may take place in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan, with priority given to candidates available to teach in Queens and Brooklyn.

Job Responsibilities Include
  • Plan and lead weekly Discover Dance residency sessions in NYC public schools.
  • Teach grade-appropriate dance lessons through movement, choreography, creative exploration, and dance appreciation.
  • Implement the Discover Dance curriculum while adapting instruction to meet the needs of individual learners.
  • Adapt instruction in collaboration with classroom teachers and school staff to support students with diverse learning needs.
  • Prepare students for live dance performances and facilitate meaningful pre- and post-performance learning experiences.
  • Participate in required trainings, curriculum meetings, planning meetings, and professional development.
  • Communicate consistently with 92NY staff, classroom teachers, and school partners.
  • Arrive prepared for each residency and manage program materials and equipment as needed.
  • Complete required program documentation by established deadlines, including attendance records, photos, student reflections, or other materials.
Experience, Education, & Skills Desired
  • Bachelor's degree in Dance, Dance Education, Performing Arts, Education, or a related
  • field, or equivalent professional training and experience.
  • Professional experience and expertise in dance education, with proficiency in Tap, Contemporary, Modern, Hip-Hop, Jazz, African Diasporic, Social Dance, or related movement traditions.
  • Experience teaching rhythm-based movement, improvisation, choreography, and creative movement exploration strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of teaching experience in school, community, or youth education settings.
  • Experience working in Title I Schools.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working directly with students with disabilities and/or diverse learning needs in classroom settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and create accessible learning experiences for students with a wide range of abilities.
  • Experience teaching in NYC public schools strongly preferred.
  • Strong classroom management, student engagement, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage scheduling, administrative responsibilities, and program documentation independently.
  • Availability during NYC public school hours.
  • NYC Department of Education fingerprint clearance, or willingness to obtain clearance before employment.

Work Hours and Environment

Applicants should be available for professional development and planning meetings with 92NY staff in September/October 2026.

Teaching takes place during regular school hours, 8:00 AM-2:30 PM, with occasional after-school hours, 2:30-5:00 PM, from October 2026-May 2027. Residency schedules are determined by school assignment.

Residency sessions typically consist of 45-minute class periods. Teaching Artists may teach multiple classes during each school visit, with schedules determined by school assignment.

Per Diem Compensation

$113 per class session.

  • Additional compensation is provided for participation in curriculum meetings with 92NY staff and planning meetings with school partners.
