The Bedford‑Stuyvesant YMCA is seeking a Dance Instructor who will choreograph and teach dance classes to children and teens, promoting enjoyment of dance, improving physical competence, building confidence, and teaching basic skill development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well‑being of participants by providing close supervision in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines.
  • Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants and create an inclusive, supportive learning environment.
  • Work with the supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
  • Create a written lesson plan as needed that is age‑appropriate and progressive.
  • Supervise participants in accordance with YMCA ratio and attendance policies.
  • Modify lesson plans and instruction to meet participant needs.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about their child’s progress and upcoming registrations.
  • Inform parents/guardians of additional YMCA opportunities beneficial to them or their child.
  • Support all participants regardless of skill level.
  • Report incidents to the Manager on Duty (MOD) when required.
  • Know branch emergency procedures and act appropriately during emergencies.
  • Assist in program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • Record accurate attendance for all classes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the program space during all activities.
  • Complete YMCA Coaching training within 90 days of employment.
  • Participate actively in all training sessions, meetings, and special events.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching dance to children/teens in a structured setting.
  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Content expertise in designated areas of dance.
  • Effective communication with members of all ages.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • Excellent customer‑service skills.
  • Availability Tuesday through Friday 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. and Saturday 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
