Overview
The Group Exercise Instructor will lead members, in a group environment, through a prearranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength and endurance, while ensuring that the safety of the members is not compromised. The Group Exercise Instructor will also serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness.

Pre-Class Preparation
- Arrive at the class location 10–15 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time to be available to interact with members, answer questions, inquire about their fitness progress, and introduce and orient new participants. Instructors should know their participants individually and have a good sense of their fitness capabilities.
- Dress in appropriate fitness attire that allows participants to see proper form, alignment, and movement. Avoid revealing or restrictive clothing. When possible, wear Gold’s Gym branded attire and wear proper footwear at all times.
During Class Responsibilities
- Introduce yourself and the format of the class.
- Identify first‑timers and assess their fitness level in a private manner.
- Ensure all verbal instructions are clear and that the volume, tempo of music, and overall atmosphere facilitate hearing, teaching, learning, and enjoyment.
- Continuously monitor participants to ensure correct form, offering variations to accommodate all fitness levels.
- Create a motivational and fun environment for all participants.
After Class Responsibilities
- Remove all music and return the microphone to its proper place.
- Leave the room in order for the next class.
- Answer any questions or concerns participants may have.
- Solicit feedback from participants about the class.
Additional Responsibilities
Refrain from playing music with offensive language, prepare suitable music for class, and ensure all equipment—including audio—functions correctly.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure the class begins and ends promptly, adjusting the flow as needed to adhere to the schedule.
- When teaching the last class of the day, follow the closing procedures outlined by the Group Exercise Director for the facility.
- If unable to teach a scheduled class, locate a qualified substitute and notify the Group Exercise Director.
- Remain dependable and consistent with class schedules, minimizing cancellations.
- Attend required staff meetings.
- Record time accurately and in a timely manner.
- Prepare incident or witness reports as needed for accidents.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude toward responsibilities, colleagues, and members.
- Promote Gold’s Gym and GGX to the fullest extent possible.
Qualifications
- At least six months teaching experience in a group exercise format.
- Knowledge of safe exercise technique and group exercise principles.
- Knowledge of basic physiology and body mechanics.
- Ability to perform a variety of exercise routines.
- Positive and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot audio equipment.
- Specialized certification (e.g., Yoga, Pilates, Body Pump, Body Attack, Zumba, Strength, Les Mills, Silver Sneakers) as applicable and proof of education.
- Group fitness certification by ACE, AFAA, ACSM, or similar organizations.
Physical Demands
The role requires the ability to lift light weights, bend, squat, jump, run, reach, walk, hop, spin, and kick, among other physical activities.
