Job summary

Atmos Energy is seeking a field technician for damage prevention operations. You will locate and mark facilities, read maps, and coordinate with crews and contractors to prevent damage. You will help maintain accurate maps and records and assist other operations as needed.

Position requires standing by for shifts, holidays, and potential travel. A safety-sensitive role with required safety training and a valid driver’s license. Equal opportunity employer.

Responsibilities

  • Locate and mark company facilities (transmission and distribution lines) accurately.
  • Read and interpret system maps and location data.
  • Collaborate with crews and contractors for accurate re-marking when needed.
  • Investigate natural gas facility damages to determine root causes.
  • Maintain relationships with excavators, municipalities, and company personnel.
  • Ensure maps and records accurately reflect damage prevention status.
  • Complete and maintain records and reports per company and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist other operations functions and may perform related work when not on damage prevention duty.
  • May be required to stand by, work various shifts, holidays, or weekends.
  • May be asked to report outside regular work area.
  • Identify and report safety and encroachment issues to resolution.
  • Safely operate and inspect assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Uphold company values and safety culture in all duties.

THIS JOB DESCRIPTION DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO LIST ALL OF THE DUTIES THAT ARE OR MAY BE PERFORMED IN THIS POSITION Primary Duties

  1. 1. Accurately locates and marks company facilities (transmission & distribution systems, service lines, & other facilities).
  2. 2. Reads and interprets system maps.
  3. 3. Works with Company crews and outside contractors to be available for any needed re-marking to prevent damage.
  4. 4. Conducts investigations of natural gas facility damages to determine root causes.
  5. 5. Maintains working relationship with area excavators, municipalities, and Company personnel responsible for excavation activities. Reports any suspected damages to our system.
  6. 6. Assures the accuracy of Company maps and records as they relate to damage prevention.
  7. 7. Completes and maintains accurate records and reports to comply with Company and regulatory requirements.
  8. 8. Assists other operations functions as needed and may perform C&M and Service work when not performing damage prevention duties.
  9. 9. May be required to hold stand-by duty, work shifts, holidays, weekends, emergency call outs, and occasional extensive hours.
  10. 10. Is subject to reporting outside regular work area.
  11. 11. Identifies, addresses, and reports safety and encroachment issues to their resolution and completion.
  12. 12. Is responsible for the safe operation and inspection of assigned Company vehicles and equipment.
  13. 13. Demonstrates support for and adheres to the Company values, strategies, policies and procedures and exhibits the core values of AtmoSpirit, Customer Service, Safety and the Code of Conduct both as an individual contributor, team member and/or leader of others.
  14. 14. Must become familiar with the contents of the Safety Manual, live by the spirit of its intent and become involved in creating and maintaining a safe working environment. Must complete all required safety training.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducational/Experience Level:

A general educational knowledge acquired through a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years experience in natural gas, damage prevention activities, service, construction and maintenance, and/or pipeline operations. Requires a thorough understanding of Company operations.

Certificates, Licenses, etc.:

Must obtain and maintain minimum Operator Qualifications (OQs) and classroom training for position and any other required OQs and classroom training or certifications within six months. Requires valid driver’s license in accordance with Company standards.

Communication Skills:

Requires the ability to communicate, persuade and/or influence internal and/or external customers. Must have strong interpersonal skills.

Computer Skills:

Requires ability to utilize the Company’s internet/intranet web site, take and upload digital photos of marking activity to each line locate ticket, and utilize all available systems for data entry, reference and/or retrieval tasks.

Work Conditions:

Works outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, and rough terrain. May require overnight travel. May have residence requirement due to call-out response time. Works as an individual contributor and/or as member of a team.

Physical Demands:

Requires occasionally performing activities including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning and/or lifting. Requires an acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and strong sense of smell. Must be able to lift tools, equipment and materials up to and including 45 pounds.

Other Requirements:

As a Safety-Sensitive position, pre and post-employment screenings, including but not limited to drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks are required.
