Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Cytotechnologist / Cytotech (PRN) is responsible for preparation and storage of all specimens and necessary documentation, and prepares stains and slides for cytotechnologic reading or review by the Pathologist.

Essential Functions
  • Stains, mounts, and studies cells of the human body to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices.
  • Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates and fixes stains and slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormal hormone conditions.
  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormalities in the color, shape, or size of cellular components and patterns.
  • Evaluate cells for the presence of cancer, precancerous changes, or infections.
  • Prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs), to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Provide patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports.
  • Assist Pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples such as by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies.
  • Perform quality assurance in the laboratory, including the maintenance of the system in accordance with the requirements of the College of the American Pathologists and preparation for site visits.
  • Prepare slides and reports in a timely fashion, ensuring quality control standards are met.
  • Maintain procedures and records to meet all regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for efficient operation of the department.
  • Actively seek ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care, or services delivered.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the occurrence reporting system and use it to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Follow established guidelines for reporting significant medical errors or unanticipated outcomes in patient care which result in patient harm.
  • Attend in‑service presentations and complete all mandatory education requirements. Use Performance Improvement Plans to enhance patient safety.
  • Maintain regular, punctual, and dependable attendance.
  • Prepare and maintain reagents and equipment.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Cytotechnology Credential (ASCP) preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of experience preferred
