Job summary

UVA Health in Charlottesville seeks a Cytologist to perform specialized testing and microscopic evaluation of cytology specimens, including gynecologic Pap tests and fine-needle aspiration samples, ensuring accuracy and correlation with patient data.

Responsibilities include data entry in Beaker, supporting FNA services, adhering to QA, safety and compliance, and coordinating Cytology training; opportunities for growth within a Magnet-recognized academic medical center.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with completion of a CAAHEP approved Cytologist program.
  • Three years of related experience is expected.
  • ASCP or equivalent licensure is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized cytology testing and microscopic evaluation of cytologic specimens.
  • Evaluate gynecologic Pap tests using cytomorphologic criteria and correlate with clinical data.
  • Evaluate non-gynecologic and fine-needle aspiration samples and interpret results.
  • Record data in the Beaker system per procedures.
  • Provide technical support for fine needle aspiration services.
  • Adhere to quality assurance, safety, and compliance programs.
  • Engage in accessioning in Beaker and prepare, stain, and cover cytology specimens.
  • Coordinate training in Cytology.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs highly specialized and complex testing that involves the microscopic screening and evaluation of cytologic specimens for the detection of cancer and other pathologic conditions.
  • Performs thorough and accurate microscopic evaluation of gynecologic Pap tests using recognized cytomorphologic criteria to make cytological interpretations and correlates findings with patient clinical data according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Performs thorough and accurate microscopic evaluation of non-gynecologic, fine needle aspiration and consult cellular samples using recognized cytomorphologic criteria to make cytological interpretations and correlates findings with patient clinical data according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Accurately records all appropriate specimen and results data for cases screened by self in the Beaker computer system in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Provides technical support for the fine needle aspiration service.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory quality assurance, safety and compliance programs and performs tasks within those guidelines.
  • Engages in accessioning into Beaker and technical processing, preparation, staining, and cover slipping of cytological specimens as assigned and within appropriate timeframes.
  • Performs area-specific support/clinical activities.
  • Coordinate training in Cytology.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree with completion of a CAAHEP approved Cytologist program

Experience: Bachelor’s Degree with completion of a CAAHEP approved Cytologist program and 3 years' experience

Licensure: CT or SCT, ASCP required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting for prolonged periods; Repetitive motion: typing. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $36.73 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
