Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a Cytology Specialist to evaluate cytologic preparations and issue diagnoses in an academic laboratory setting. You will support specimen processing, screening workflows, quality control, and reporting across diverse specimen types.

The role includes hands-on experience with fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures and rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), contributing to specimen adequacy and timely care decisions within a leading Alabama health system.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a science related field required.
• Completion of a Cytology training program approved by CAAHEP within the last five years is required.
• Currently certified as a Cytologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytology (SCT) by ASCP is required.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate cytologic preparations microscopically to determine presence or absence of malignant cells, pre-malignant changes or inflammatory lesions, and issue final or provisional diagnoses as appropriate.
• Handle cytologic specimens including accessioning, preparation and reporting, following quality control procedures and maintaining documentation.
• Perform cytopreparatory procedures and troubleshoot to ensure consistent results.

Job Description

To include identification and subjective interpretation of disease processes. To handle cytologic specimens including, accessioning, preparation and reporting, following quality control procedures and maintaining documentation. To perform cytopreparatory procedures, including troubleshooting when necessary to ensure consistent results.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a science related field and successful completion within the last five (5) years of a Cytology training program approved by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently certified as a Cytologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytology (SCT) by The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required.
