Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Medical Technologist to analyze chromosomes and FISH data from bone marrow, blood, amniotic fluid, and tissues. This high-complexity testing guides diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease and cancer.

The role requires a BS in Genetics/Biology/Clinical Lab Science/Medical Technology, ASCP preferred, and AC certification within the first year if not current. Regular full-time position in Cytogenetics-Genomics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Biology, Clinical Lab Science, Medical Technology or related field.
  • ASCP certification preferred; must be obtained within first year if not current.
  • Career ladder consideration for internal candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform chromosome analysis for genetic disease (hematologic and constitutional).
  • Perform cell culture work – setup, harvest, slide preparation, slide banding, FISH setup and reagent prep.
  • Maintain specimen integrity throughout workflow.
  • Ensure accuracy and precision; judge test result acceptability.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and culture/harvest issues.
  • Maintain and adhere to QC/QA logs.
  • Enter results in EPIC and verify to minimize clerical errors.
  • Recognize and document critical or abnormal results.
  • Maintain competency in cytogenetics tests and perform as assigned.
