Job summary

West Haven Community House is seeking a dedicated CYS Assistant Teacher to join our Children and Youth Services program in a part-time capacity. The role supports the Head Teacher in creating a warm, safe environment and developing age-appropriate activities for children.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 am–9:00 am and 2:00 pm–5:30 pm (27.5 hours weekly). Benefits include tuition assistance, EAP, referral bonuses, and a free Planet Fitness Black Card gym membership.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year supervised experience working with children.
  • Commitment to obtain 3 credits in state approved courses relating to school age childcare, up to 12 credits total.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate activities and environments.
  • Plan daily activities addressing emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs; include SEL, STEAM, multicultural, literacy and service-learning.
  • Document programming and student attendance using required systems; follow the CYS staff handbook policies.
  • Support safety, supervision, and positive discipline; follow schedules and communicate with parents/teachers as needed.

Education

ASSISTANT TEACHER

REPORTS TO : Head Teacher

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

To assist the Head Teacher in providing a warm, nurturing, and safe environment in which children's self-concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High SchoolDiploma
  • One-year supervised experience working withchildren.
  • Commitment to obtain 3 credits in state approved courses that pertain to school age childcare, until a minimum of 12 credits is reached
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Understand the Head Teacher role and assist the Head Teacher in implementation of developmentally appropriate principles, through planning daily activities that meet the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs of both the individual and the group -SEL, STEAM, multicultural, literacy and Service-Learning activities
  • Participate in monthly staff development activities and workshops, and regular,scheduled planning/training meetings with the HeadTeacher.
  • Responsible for the accurate implementation and completion of required programming and documentation (i.e., Kindertales- Behavior, sign ins and outs, etc.)
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures in CYS Staff Handbook
Children:
  • Ensure the safety and security of allchildren, always maintain visualsupervision.
  • Supervise children's activities and encourage their participation in activities. Enforce safety practices and intervene in a positive manner when children are likely to injure themselves oreach other. Consult with Head Teacher when need arises to changes schedules or scheduling meetings with parents/school personnel.
  • Assist children to learn problem solving and conflict resolutionskills. Use appropriate and positive discipline, ensuring that discipline is consistent and followsprogram guidelines.
  • Assist children to learn self-control. Observe and document significant individual and/or group behavior on Kindertales. Report to Head Teacher any unusual incidents or accidents.
  • Be a positive role model in attitude, behavior, and language. Maintain Confidentiality as per program guidelines.
  • Be very aware of who has special needs, allergies, restrictions, and care plans. Be diligent in following plans and ensuring the wellbeing of the identifiedneed.
  • Immediately report any suspected incident of child abuse or neglect to your immediate supervisor and Director. Follow protocols for reporting to the DCFhotline.
Classroom and Play Yard Duties:
  • Prepare supplies, activities and the classroom for the day and facilitate as scheduled. If needed transport supplies to the sites.
  • Assist the Head Teacher with documentation includingattendance.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of environments that provide choices and varietythat are appropriate to children's developmentalpotential.
  • Assist with the maintenance of an orderly, clean environment forchildren. Report and remove (when possible) potentialhazards
  • Know all State/WHCH regulations, routines, policies, and procedures regarding the program and assist the Head Teacher with ensuring their implementation. Must maintain compliance with OEC and BCIS Registries.
  • Enlist the cooperation of the children wheneverpossible.
  • Ensure that all students have the opportunity to pick their own activity from a variety ofopen centers.
  • Must be flexible about site assignments and availability to work on extended days and the summer program. Extended days being those days when school is closed, and Child Care is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
