Job summary

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is seeking a security operations specialist to protect our systems and support uptime onsite in Newport News, VA. You will manage intrusion detection, vulnerability management, and incident response in a lab environment with cutting-edge technology.

Responsibilities include monitoring IDS and networks, performing vulnerability scans, coordinating with staff for mitigations, and training users on security best practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma; pursuing a bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Programming ability in Perl, Python, C/C++ or shell scripting.
• Understanding of network protocols and computer architectures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Experience with JavaScript/HTML preferred.

Responsibilities

• Monitor a dedicated IDS and general system and network operations for indications of intrusions or vulnerable configurations.
• Perform daily monitoring of security information sources.
• Perform vulnerability scanning, reporting and mitigation with staff and users.
• Support incident response activities including evidence collection and forensics.
• Protect lab cloud-based applications and data.
• Provide continuous enhancement of intrusion detection and monitoring systems, including third-party packages or in-house software.
• Provide after-hours support where necessary.
