Job description

Company: Confidential — Custom Cabinet Manufacturer

Job Title: Design Engineer

Compensation: $65,000–$90,000, depending on experience

A custom cabinet manufacturer is adding to its design engineer team. You'd take a customer's project, draw it in Cabinet Vision, and a few weeks later see it cut on the CNC, built on the floor, and installed in a home in Central Oregon. You sit between the designers and the shop, and the whole project runs on your files. There's more work than the current engineers can carry, and they need someone who can take on a full schedule and run it.

Everything happens under one roof here: design, engineering, manufacturing, finishing, and installation, in a 40,000-plus-square-foot facility. The company has been in operations for decades and with recent backing by a long-term investment firm, they are scaling to the next level. The leadership team is tenured and homegrown, several of them came up through the shop themselves, and they will train the right person on their software and their way of executing.

The Goal

Two to three months in, you are carrying a full job schedule like the rest of the engineering team, drawing accurately in the company's software and catching the measurement and fit issues that cause rework before they ever reach the floor.

Outcomes You'll Be Responsible For
  • Draw build-ready files: Turn each job into accurate Cabinet Vision drawings and cut sheets the shop can build from without guessing.
  • Verify the field: Measure job sites yourself and confirm outlets, windows, and openings so discrepancies get caught before they become production errors.
  • Own the CNC hand-off: Turn your drawings into clean machining files and shop documents, keeping the specs aligned with how the cabinet actually goes together.
  • Keep multiple jobs moving: Juggle several active projects at once and stay organized through the interruptions that come with being the person the shop asks.
  • Partner with the designers: Flag what will not work, talk through the fix, and keep the design intent intact from concept to install.
Skills Needed to Apply
  • Hands-on CAD drafting experience. Cabinet Vision is ideal, but comparable cabinetry CAD (2020, Cabnetware, Mozaik, Microvellum) or strong transferable CAD like SolidWorks that you can convert works too.
  • A real feel for how a physical product goes together. Cabinetry is preferred, and millwork, casework, closet, panel, window, or furniture fabrication backgrounds translate. This hands-on grounding is the piece degreed mechanical or electrical engineers without shop time tend to miss.
  • Applied math you reach for without thinking: geometry, trigonometry, and precise measurement, with a low tolerance for error.
  • Attention to detail and the focus to keep several jobs on track without dropping one.
  • A valid Oregon driver's license, an insurable record, and the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Nice to Have
  • CNC programming, and if you do not have it, they will train you.
  • Time in a custom or semi-custom cabinet shop.
Qualities That Will Make You Successful
  • Detail-driven: You measure twice, catch the thing everyone else missed, and rarely make the same mistake twice.
  • Focused through interruptions: You can stop to help the shop, then pick your own work back up without losing the thread.
  • A hands-on learner: You pick things up by doing and shadowing, and you are genuinely curious about how things get built.
  • Grounded: No ego about the title. This is a down-to-earth team, and the people who do well here care more about good work than polish.
  • Steady: You show up with a good attitude, own your misses, and learn from them.
