Job summary

Douglas Unified School District is seeking a part-time Custodians (Substitute) to provide custodial services for a healthy and safe environment by cleaning and maintaining designated facilities at assigned schools in Douglas, Arizona.

Starting immediately, this role requires high school diploma or GED, up to one year custodial experience preferred; duties include floor care, restroom sanitation, trash removal, light equipment operation, and assisting with special events. Wage is $15.55 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Provide custodial services to maintain a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Perform floor care including sweeping, mopping, and basic maintenance.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and common areas; empty trash and recycle where applicable.
  • Clean windows, surfaces, and interior/exterior spaces as assigned.
  • Operate basic cleaning equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for events and activities.

Job Description

SUMMARY:Provides custodial services for a healthy and safe environment by cleaning and maintaining designated facilities at assigned school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans carpets; dusts and cleans blinds, curtains, and screens
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork
  • Polishes metal work
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, plumbing fixtures, and fountains; disinfects biohazard storage areas
  • Picks up litter, empties and cleans trash containers; empties refuse into main bin
  • Cleans and washes windows, walls, walkways, patios and other outside areas
  • Climbs ladders, cleans lighting equipment, and equipment and replaces light bulbs or fluorescent tubes
  • Rearranges and moves furniture and equipment
  • Maintains stock of supplies such as soap, towels, and tissues
  • Maintains cleaning tools, equipment, and materials in proper condition
  • Assists with set-up and cleaning for special events
  • Maintains security of building by ensuring that doors and windows are locked; reports unlocked doors and windows, fire hazards and persons acting suspiciously to supervision or school security; denies access to unauthorized persons
  • May operate a vehicle, such as a pick-up truck or van
  • Adheres to instructions for mixing and diluting cleaners, disinfectants, and stripping agents to ensure proper usage strength and safe use
  • Reports equipment malfunctions, needed repairs and safety/hygiene infractions to supervisor
  • May provide guidance or training to other custodial staff
  • Follows safe work procedures; ensures proper safety precautions, regulations, and industrial hygiene practices are observed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work
  • Knowledge of the proper care and storage of custodial equipment and materials
  • Knowledge of dilution of cleaning chemicals/conversion of pH charts and of the use of MSDS
  • Ability to recognize potential safety problems and to take steps to prevent hazards
  • Ability to operate modern mechanical equipment such as floor vacuums (wet and dry), floor buffers, carpet shampoo and steam cleaners, mops, brooms, dust pans, ladders, small hand tools, computer (timecard entry) and vehicles
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
  • Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One year of previous custodial experience preferred
    • Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and operate foot controls. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment and will be subject to exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals and biohazards. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions with exposure to heat, cold, dust and fumes. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment and will be subject to exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals and biohazards. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Contact with employees, students and public.
