Job summary

Hy-Vee Inc. is seeking a Custodian to keep the store clean, safe, and welcoming for customers. You will perform sweeping, mopping, waxing, and general cleaning throughout the store and assist in other areas as needed to maintain a positive shopping environment.

No formal education or experience is required; we provide all necessary training. You should be reliable, friendly, and capable of working as part of a team in a busy retail setting.

Responsibilities

The Role and Why It's Important

Our Custodians play an essential role in making sure Hy-Vee stores are clean, safe, and welcoming for every customer who walks through the door. In this role, you'll be responsible for the total cleanliness and appearance of the store inside and out, keeping equipment maintained and ensuring a positive environment for customers and employees alike. What You'll Do

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every interaction a positive one
• Maintain total store cleanliness and appearance inside and out, including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, power washing, scrubbing, dusting, shampooing carpets, and sanitizing
• Change ceiling lights and install or replace towel, paper, and soap dispensers as needed
• Monitor plumbing, fixtures, coolers, and freezers and notify supervisors of any issues
• Empty garbage and crush cardboard throughout your shift
• Unclog drains as needed and perform routine equipment maintenance
• Clean cooling systems and filters for the store
• Order cleaning products as needed and audit invoices for correctness where applicable
• Conduct quarterly inventory on products for costs and amounts used
• Do price checks, return carts from the parking lot, and sack for customers as needed
• Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned
• Adhere to all Hy‑Vee policies and individual store guidelines
• Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

• Solve practical problems and interpret instructions across a variety of situations with limited standardization
• Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers accurately
• Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing
• Work effectively as part of a team to keep the store clean and running smoothly

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Service Managers

Education and Experience

No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This role is performed throughout the store and surrounding exterior areas. You will have regular exposure to noise, temperature extremes, dampness, dirt, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
