The ideal candidate will have experience in custodial work, particularly in a school setting, and be able to operate floor care equipment. The position involves working Monday to Friday from 2:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

As a Custodian, you will play an essential role in supporting students, staff, and visitors by ensuring that classrooms, offices, common areas, and outdoor spaces are well‑maintained and ready for daily activities. From performing routine cleaning and floor care to reporting repair needs and completing minor maintenance tasks, your work will contribute directly to a positive learning environment.

Position Highlights

• Henry Abbott Technical High School, Danbury, CT
• Part‑time, 2nd Shift, 32.5 hours per week
• Monday – Friday, 2:30 pm – 9:30 pm (year‑round position; 1st shift during summer break)
• Permanent part‑time employees eligible for benefits and accrue vacation and sick leave in accordance with hours worked

Responsibilities

• Perform custodial tasks and maintenance of buildings and grounds, including dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, kitchens, dining rooms, lavatories, and outdoor areas.
• Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers.
• Wash, dust, and polish glass, windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment.
• Make beds; store and issue linens, blankets, and clothing as needed.
• Collect, count, and dispose of soiled laundry, garbage, and recyclables.
• Report repair needs and perform minor maintenance tasks.
• Run errands, inspect buildings for damage, and report conditions to supervisor.
• Change light bulbs, replace fuses, lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, and cabinets.
• Replace ceiling or floor tiles, remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways, and sand and salt stairways as required.
• Move furniture and set up classrooms.
• Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing custodial work in a school.
• Experience waxing and polishing floors with floor polishers and buffers.
• Experience removing snow and ice from stairways and walkways around schools or other large buildings.
• Experience with deep cleaning and disinfecting large facilities.
• Experience moving furniture in a school and setting up classrooms.

Special requirements: Incumbents may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

Physical requirements: Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

Working conditions: Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
