Job summary

Portsmouth School District is seeking a dependable Custodian to perform cleaning, basic maintenance, and outdoor grounds duties in our school facilities.

Under supervision, you will maintain cleanliness, assist with event setups, monitor security, and report issues promptly to the Custodial Supervisor. Experience in building maintenance is desirable; a high school diploma and reliable transportation are preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to perform duties.
• Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance desirable.
• State Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.

Responsibilities

• Maintains orderly general appearance in all assigned areas.
• Adjusts heating controls and performs boiler checks as required.
• Performs minor maintenance repairs when possible (windows, locks, painting).
• Checks doors and windows for security when not in session; responds to alarms.
• Sets up equipment for special events as requested.
• Reports problems to supervisor promptly.
• Maintains grounds including snow removal.
• Removes rubbish and waste paper.
• Assists with principal's programs and event activities.
• Includes outside supervision in parking lot at dismissal times.

Custodian

Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Custodial Supervisor and Director of Buildings & Grounds/ Maintenance, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipment in functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others as necessary. Performs related duties and general maintenance work as required.

Accountability

• Accountable for cleaning and general appearance of building or buildings assigned, and surrounding grounds assigned.
• Adjustments of heating controls when specified perform boiler checks as requested by their building supervisors.
• Minor repairs when necessary and possible.
• Maintaining of security of the building or buildings during regular working hours and on special occasions as scheduled by supervisor.
• Setting up for all special events when requested to do so.
• Reporting to supervisor of any problem in areas assigned – custodial or maintenance.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Work Performed

• Performs such duties as outlined by supervisor to maintain orderly general appearance in all assigned areas.
• Adjustments of heating controls when specified as required by their building supervisor.
• Perform minor maintenance repairs when possible (window replacement, lock repair, routine painting, etc.).
• Check all doors and windows, when school is not in session or use, for security reasons, answer all alarms or other emergencies when called by the appropriate officials, report any problems to supervisor immediately when security problems exist.
• Setting up necessary equipment for special events when requested to do so.
• Reports any problems custodial or other to supervisor immediately.
• Maintains specified areas on grounds (snow removal, etc.).
• Removes rubbish and waste paper.
• Performs duties as required to carry out principal's program or programs as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as required, including outside supervision in parking lot at dismissal times.

Special Note: Cleaning, As Defined, Is

• Sweeping and washing as necessary, sealing and waxing, as necessary.
• Washing and disinfecting toilet bowls, lavatories, urinals, water fountains, walls floors and other specified areas.
• Dust woodwork and furniture (wash and/or polish if necessary).

Equipment Used

• Necessary equipment supplied by supervisor – tools, pails, mops, brooms, floor equipment, and other necessary supplies.

Records and Reports

• Building problems to supervisor.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

• Works in standard office and school building environments.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.

Qualifications Profile

• Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
• High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
• Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance desirable.
