Job summary

The School custodian is responsible for performing routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure that school buildings and grounds are safe, clean, and in orderly condition. This position supports the daily operation of a healthy and functional learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Essential Job Functions
  • Building Safety & Security: Ensure the overall safety, security, and maintenance of the school building and athletic areas. Locks and unlocks doors, turns lights on/off, and secures the building as needed. Reports maintenance needs or safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Cleaning & Sanitation: Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and scrubs floors in classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gyms, and other school areas. Dusts and wipes down desks, counters, ledges, and other surfaces. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; restocks soap, paper towels, and other supplies. Empties trash and recycling bins and disposes of waste properly.
  • Event & Room Setup: Sets up and breaks down rooms for meetings, events, or classroom changes (e.g., moves furniture, sets up chairs/tables). Assists with deliveries and distribution of supplies throughout the building.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Maintains school grounds, including sweeping sidewalks, removing litter, and clearing snow or leaves as needed.
  • Maintenance: Performs basic maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, replacing filters, or unclogging drains.
  • Safety Procedures: Follows all district safety procedures and wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Uses cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and according to instructions. Participates in required safety training and emergency drills.

Qualifications, Experience, and Education
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution. (PREFERRED)
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience. (PREFERRED)
Computer and Equipment Skills
  • Basic computer skills to manages work orders, inventory tracking, and communication.
