Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Custodian for a full-time evening shift to maintain the cleanliness of school buildings and grounds. You will gain classroom and on-the-job training while supervising other custodians as needed.

The role features an after-school/evening schedule (2:00pm-10:30pm) and compensation aligned with experience under the Unified Experience Based Step Pay Scale. Benefits are included per district policy.

Qualifications

• GED or some high school required.
• Preferred: High School Diploma.
• Some custodial experience and some experience leading other custodians in a school setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform intermediate level custodial tasks to maintain cleanliness of school buildings and surrounding grounds.
• Supervise other custodial staff as needed.
• Secure building; take out trash, clean bathrooms, halls, classrooms and gym.
• Mop and buff the halls; clean cafeteria after activities.
• Change lights and restock paper towel and toilet paper dispensers.
• Clean and dust high and low, wipe desks and chalkboards; empty trashcans.
• Sweep, mop, buff, strip and wipe walls and floors.
• Clean gym, water fountains and clean up after activities.
• Occasionally supervise Custodian I positions.
• Set up and remove chairs for events; return areas to order.

Job description

General Responsibilities

Performs intermediate level custodial work in maintaining the cleanliness of school buildings and surrounding grounds. An employee in this position receives classroom and hands-on-training in the use of cleaning tools, equipment and supplies, and safety and personal protection necessary to perform custodial work. Supervise other custodial staff members.

• May serve as the head night custodian in an elementary school.
• Secure building; take out the trash, clean bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, and the gym.
• Mop and buff the halls.
• Clean the cafeteria after the school activities.
• Change lights; fill all the paper towel dispensers, and toilet paper dispensers.
• Clean and Dust high and low, clean the chalkboards and trays, wipe clean the desks, empty trashcans.
• Clean all the bathroom stalls and sinks, fill toilet paper dispenser, soap dispenser, paper towel dispenser, sweep and mop the floors, wipe the walls.
• Sweep, mop, buff, strip and wipe all the walls.
• Clean gym, sweep and spot mop, clean water fountains, and clean up after activities.
• Occasionally supervise Custodian I's.
• Set up and pick up chairs, clean, sweep and pick up all trash.
• Replace lights on a daily basis for inside and outside of the school building.
• Assist when other staff members are out.
• Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Must have a knowledge of effective cleaning techniques and routine preventive maintenance; knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies, equipment, building fixtures and equipment. Ability to learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment especially as machines/equipment is upgraded; ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, train and provide work direction to other in a manner that is conducive to full performance and high morale of the employee; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators and staff. Must be able to respond to emergencies and work in inclement weather, as needed; must be able to rotate between a day/night shift, as directed.

Education And Experience

Required: GED or some high school

Preferred: High School Diploma. Some custodial experience Some experience leading other custodians in a school setting.

A comparable amount of training and experience maybe substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Physical Requirements

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent walking, standing, bending, grasping, repetitive motion, and reaching, Occasional stooping, balancing, crouching, kneeling, and fingering. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, extreme vibrations, hazards such as electric current, exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, etc. and/or loud noises. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

Salary Range: From/To

Hourly rate range: $16.79 - $24.49

Hours: 2:00pm-10:30pm

Compensation will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. The entry-level rate will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the rate will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
