Job summary

Reports to: Director of Maintenance, Lead or Head Custodian, Site Principal

Supervises: N/A

Job Goal: Keeps the district's school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Employment Terms: 12 Months, 8 hours per day

Occasionally, special arrangements may be made with the supervisor if the situation warrants. Supervisor approval is required if the contract day varies.

FLSA Classification: Nonexempt

Evaluation: Annually by Site Principal

Regular Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and finger to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
As Needed / Ongoing
  • Keep building and premises (sidewalks, driveways and play areas) neat and clean at all times.
  • Know location and proper care and use of all firefighting equipment.
  • Maintain clean and orderly storage rooms, including tools and supplies.
  • Promptly report hazards to building principal.
  • Operate and maintain buffers, sanders, vacuum cleaners and other janitorial equipment.
  • Move equipment and/or furniture when needed. Set up and remove folding tables and other equipment for lunch, recreation, or special events.
Daily
  • Close assigned building each evening, including ensuring that all students are out of the buildings, lights are off, thermostats are set, windows and doors are locked, rooms are check for fire hazards, etc.
  • Clean and disinfect bathroom sinks, walls, toilets and floors.
  • Spray, disinfect and deodorize assigned building.
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain water fountains.
  • Sweep and mop all hallways and rooms.
  • Vacuum all carpets.
  • Empty all trash receptacles.
Weekly
  • Clean all windows, woodwork, metalwork and door mats.
  • Dust lockers.
  • Inventory and order custodial supplies in accordance with district purchasing procedures.
Monthly
  • Polish linoleum, tile and hardwood floors.
  • Dust blinds.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers, lights and ballasts, and HVAC filters.
Winter Inclement Weather

In the event school is cancelled due to winter precipitation, restore safe parking lots, walkways, steps, etc. prior to classes resuming. This includes plowing, shoveling, de-icing and sanding.

Summer

During summer break, conduct seasonal and annual maintenance rather than daily tasks.

  • Clear each classroom of all equipment and strip, clean and seal floors.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Paint as needed.
  • Move furniture.
  • Organize cleaning procedures.
  • Perform non-routine maintenance.
  • Pick up outside trash.
Other
  • Complies with all federal, state and local laws and board policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes professional behavior in all school related interactions.
  • Assists in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn, spreading ice melt).
  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment etc in the building.
  • Restocks disposable items and provides head custodian with inventory usage and data.
  • Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within building and in obtaining and setting up need equipment.
  • Maintains building and grounds security in the building each working day.
  • Performs all other tasks as supervisor may assign.
