Job summary

Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in Pittsburgh (Oakland) seeks a full-time housekeeper for the Respite House, a 24/7 facility supporting students with visual impairments. You will perform cleaning, janitorial tasks, and assist with daily operations to maintain a hygienic living and learning environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Driver’s license preferred.
• Previous experience as a housekeeper preferred.
• Must hold and maintain proper clearances for Acts 34, 114, and 151.

Responsibilities

• Thoroughly cleans restrooms, bedrooms, therapy areas, common areas, dorms, dining areas, hallways, stairwells, and offices as assigned by performing duties such as mopping/waxing floors, vacuuming carpets, spot cleaning carpet stains, dusting, cleaning windows.
• Maintains lighting in assigned areas.
• Moves furniture as needed.
• Reports on all needed repairs.
• Drive Respite vehicles as assigned.
• Maintains grounds, including snow removal.
• Assists with room set ups, transportation, and maintenance as needed.
• Follows assigned schedule without the need for frequent reminders.
• Demonstrate reliable, dependable, and prompt work ethic such as good attendance record and ready to work at start of shift.
• Utilizes safe lifting techniques.
• Takes initiative to assist others when own duties are complete.
• Receptive to receiving direction and constructive criticism.

Located in the heart of Oakland, Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is a one-of-a-kind educational experience committed to empowering our students to realize their full potential. The School also provides vital early intervention and outreach services to visually impaired students, with or without additional challenges, throughout western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1887, our School is best equipped to care for and educate students with visual impairments. As a private institution chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the School educates approximately 200 enrolled students from 80-85 school districts within western Pennsylvania.

Position Overview:

The Housekeeper provides cleaning and janitorial type services for the School to ensure a hygienic and safe educational / dormitory environment. This role will be working within our newly developed Respite House, which will operate 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. This role will be required to work on holidays when their shift falls on a holiday, but will receive holiday pay during those instances. The Respite House will host four beds to individuals in need for around the clock care.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule:

Mondays through Fridays from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm

Working Days: Year-round position

Pay: $18/hr

Working Conditions:

• 40-hour onsite work week with opportunity for overtime work
• Bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting on a frequent basis
• Pushing, pulling and grasping on a regular basis
• Lifting and moving furniture on a regular basis
• Lifting bags of salt
• Walking and standing during most of shift
• Climbing ladders and scaffolding
• Assisting with students in emergency situations, including lifting
• Working outside in all types of weather
• Visually surveying work area for areas in specific need of attention
