Job summary

The Town of Abingdon is seeking a reliable Custodian to maintain cleanliness of the facility and grounds, and to set up for activities. The role requires working daily with minimal supervision and may include evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, restrooms, stocking supplies, maintaining records, and ensuring doors are locked with alarm systems. Prior custodial experience and knowledge of janitorial equipment are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 2 years of custodial experience.
• Knowledge of custodial procedures and equipment operation.
• Ability to use basic hand tools such as hammers and screwdrivers.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic cleaning: sweep, mop, wax floors, vacuum carpets, and dust surfaces.
• Set up and take down for meetings and activities; move tables and chairs up to 50 pounds.
• Maintain restrooms, kitchens, and surrounding grounds in a sanitary condition.
• Verify completion of cleaning tasks and report facility or inventory needs to supervisor.
• Lock all doors and set alarm system; stock areas with cleaning supplies.

Job description

Purpose and Objective of the Position

Custodian is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility and surrounding grounds and set-up for activities. The employee must be able to work on a daily basis without supervision and make reasonable judgments and decisions when necessary. This is a rotating position and does require evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Of The Position

• Perform basic custodial duties to include: sweeps, mops and waxes floors and stairwells; vacuums and cleans carpets on a routine basis; cleans windows and changes light bulbs; dusts and/or polishes furniture, window ledges, banisters, ceilings, bleachers, light fixtures; maintains and cleans restrooms, drinking fountains, and kitchens in a sanitary manner; removes litter and waste paper from inside the building and on the grounds surrounding the building; sets up and takes down for meetings and other activities; carries equipment, tables, chairs and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds and must climb stairs; performs minor repairs to the facility and equipment; utilizes safety measures and assists in the overall safety at all times inside the building and on the grounds; replaces soap and paper products in dispensers; cleans restroom and other duties as directed.


• Custodian must be able to complete their required cleaning tasks and verifies completion of tasks performed, communicating with supervisor any facility, inventory and/or staff needs.


• Is responsible for stocking areas with appropriate cleaning supplies.


• Aids and maintains maintenance records.


• Responsibilities include verifying all doors are locked and setting alarm system

Skills And Requirements

• High school diploma or GED


• At least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified


• Knowledge of custodial procedures and ability to complete assigned tasks.


• Knowledge of and the ability to operate janitorial equipment such as buffers, carpet cleaners, etc.


• Knowledge and the ability to use hand tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, power tools, etc.
