Job summary

The Town of Abingdon is seeking a capable Custodian responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the facility and grounds and setting up for activities. This rotating position requires evenings and weekends and working without supervision, with tasks ranging from floor care to minor repairs.

Essential duties include cleaning restrooms and kitchens, stocking supplies, and ensuring doors are locked and alarms set.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 2 years of experience directly related to custodian duties.
• Knowledge of custodial procedures and ability to complete assigned tasks.
• Knowledge of and ability to operate janitorial equipment such as buffers and carpet cleaners.
• Knowledge of hand tools (hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, power tools).

Responsibilities

• Perform basic custodial duties: sweeping, mopping, waxing floors; vacuuming; cleaning windows; restrooms and kitchens; remove litter and waste; setup for meetings and events; carry equipment up to 50 pounds; minor repairs.
• Verify completion of tasks and communicate facility or staff needs to supervisor.
• Stock areas with appropriate cleaning supplies.
• Maintain maintenance records and secure doors; set alarm system.

Job description

Purpose and Objective of the Position

Custodian is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility and surrounding grounds and set-up for activities. The employee must be able to work on a daily basis without supervision and make reasonable judgments and decisions when necessary. This is a rotating position and does require evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Of The Position

• Perform basic custodial duties to include: sweeps, mops and waxes floors and stairwells; vacuums and cleans carpets on a routine basis; cleans windows and changes light bulbs; dusts and/or polishes furniture, window ledges, banisters, ceilings, bleachers, light fixtures; maintains and cleans restrooms, drinking fountains, and kitchens in a sanitary manner; removes litter and waste paper from inside the building and on the grounds surrounding the building; sets up and takes down for meetings and other activities; carries equipment, tables, chairs and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds and must climb stairs; performs minor repairs to the facility and equipment; utilizes safety measures and assists in the overall safety at all times inside the building and on the grounds; replaces soap and paper products in dispensers; cleans restroom and other duties as directed.
• Custodian must be able to complete their required cleaning tasks and verifies completion of tasks performed, communicating with supervisor any facility, inventory and/or staff needs.
• Is responsible for stocking areas with appropriate cleaning supplies.
• Aids and maintains maintenance records.
• Responsibilities include verifying all doors are locked and setting alarm system
