Job summary

Clark-State-College in Springfield is seeking a dedicated night janitor responsible for cleaning, securing buildings, and light maintenance. The role requires the use of floor cleaning machines, snow removal, and reporting any irregularities to supervision.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and up to six months of related experience; willingness to work third shift and overtime is required. • 3rd shift hours: 10pm–6:30am & 5pm–1:30am on Fridays.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Unlocks or secures buildings per schedule and guards property against fire, theft, and entry.
• Performs cleaning: lights, furniture, floors, restrooms; dusting and scrubbing surfaces.
• Performs snow removal and applies de-icing chemicals as directed; overtime may be required.
• Collects trash and manages recycling; moves furniture as directed.
• Inspects equipment locations, reports irregularities to maintenance or supervisor.

Job description

3rd shift - Monday - Thursday; 10pm - 6:30am and Friday; 5pm - 1:30am

Location: Springfield Location

• Unlocks or secures buildings in accordance with approved schedules and guards property against fire, theft and illegal entry.

• Checks mechanical equipment, lights, and replaces lights.

• Knows locations of fire extinguishers, alarm boxes, and is able to complete monthly inspections of equipment.

• Obeys all safety regulations including Material Safety Data Sheets and College safety policies and procedures at all times.

• Straightens, dusts, and cleans furniture, fixtures, windowsills, doors, furnishings; performs mopping, sweeping, dust mopping, and scrubbing of floors, walls, windows and other surfaces; cleans and services restrooms daily as required.

• Performs project cleaning, scrubbing, waxing, heating vents, carpet cleaning, glass, etc.

• Collects trash, co-mingles recycling and paper recycling, removing it from the building to the correct exterior dumpster container.

• Removes snow and ice from entrances, walks, handicap ramps, and stairs. Applies snow and ice melting chemicals as needed and directed. Snow removal work does require mandatory overtime.

• Polices grounds.

• Moves furniture as directed by supervisor.

• Advises supervisor or appropriate persons of any irregularities or problems.

• All other duties assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge and Skills

Interpersonal Skills

Normal courtesy in dealing with others is required. Work involves minimal contacts, usually within the department. Contact usually involving routine, non-sensitive issues. External contacts are limited to incidental contacts with visitors, or no contact.

Other Skills

• Ability to operate and complete daily service of floor cleaning machines (auto scrubbers, carpet extractors)
• Ability to identify improper noises coming from mechanical rooms and report to maintenance technician or supervisor
• Ability to operate after hour alarm systems (SONITROL/NWOSS)
• Ability to use snow removal equipment (snow blowers, gators)
• Ability to use computer to enter time sheets, check HDA (help desk authority) and EMS (Event Management System)
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in performance of assigned duties
• Ability to work irregular schedules, hours and overtime. Including Saturdays, holidays, morning shifts, mid-day shifts, second shift and third shift

Physical Requirements

The work requires minor physical exertion such as short periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Job may require recurring lifting of lightweight objects with infrequent bending or stooping alternating with the lighter activities. Job requires minimal agility and dexterity.

Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
