Job summary

Sylvania seeks a Custodian for Highland Park High School on the 3rd shift: 10:30pm–6:30am, Sunday–Thursday. This non-exempt role maintains a safe, clean, and healthy learning environment by performing routine custodial duties and monitoring facility conditions.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, good communication, independence, and the ability to work with limited supervision. Reports to Building Manager and may assist in summer shifts and minor maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years of custodial experience preferred.
  • Experience maintaining professional working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and school community members.
  • Proficient in the proper handling of chemical cleaners and supplies, adhering to manufacturer's instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building.
  • Maintains building and grounds security in the building each school day.
  • Restocks disposable items and provides head custodian with inventory usage and data.
  • Assist the visiting public, utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment.
  • During the summer months, this position will work 1st shift 6:30am - 3:00pm
  • Required to participate in the annual state-required professional development classes.
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  • Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
  • Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
  • Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels; for positions within on-campus residence halls, responsible for reporting concerns related to on-campus residents.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Participate in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures.
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  • May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions.
  • May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Location: Highland Park High School
Pay Rate: $20.25/hour with a 3rd shift annual stipend of $600 annually

Summary: This is a third shift role with hours 10:30pm to 6:30am (Sunday through Thursday).

The Custodian is primarily responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy physical environment in our facilities, thereby ensuring full educational use of school facilities for students, staff, parents, and the school community.

Essential Functions

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups. Apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Mathematical and Technical Skills

Must be able to do basic math with addition, subtraction and division. Using the software to clock in/clock out and request time off is also needed.

Reasoning Ability

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of verbal and written instructions and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.

Build positive relationships with constituents of the District 113 community that includes, teachers, school staff, administrative team, Board of Education, guardians, students, and private providers.
