Job summary

The Scituate School Department in North Scituate, Rhode Island is seeking a reliable Custodian for a 34‑hour, part‑time role to maintain cleanliness, security and the overall appearance of district facilities. The position requires in‑person submission of documents and supports a safe, healthy learning environment for students, staff, families and the community.

Starting date is immediate; applications include W‑4, FBI/BCI and I‑9 in person.

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial and cleaning duties across classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and common areas.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Assist with grounds maintenance and emergency weather readiness as needed.
  • Open, secure, and monitor buildings; ensure safety and access control.
  • Support events with setup/breakdown and material movement.
  • Follow district policies, safety regulations, and maintain records.

Position Summary
The Scituate School Department seeks a reliable, hardworking, and safety‑conscious Custodian to support the cleanliness, maintenance, security, and overall appearance of district facilities. The successful candidate will help provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and community members by performing custodial, maintenance, and facility support duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Building Cleaning and Sanitation
Clean, disinfect, and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned areas.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and wash floors, walls, windows, furniture, and fixtures.
Replenish restroom and custodial supplies as needed.
Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and waste materials.
Follow established cleaning schedules and sanitation protocols.

Floor and Facility Maintenance
Operate and maintain custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and vacuum systems.
Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors as directed.
Perform routine maintenance tasks and report building maintenance needs to supervisors.
Assist with preventative maintenance activities and minor repairs.

Grounds and Seasonal Responsibilities
Assist with snow removal activities, including shoveling, salting, sanding, and clearing walkways, entrances, and exits.
Support grounds maintenance activities as assigned.
Assist with emergency weather response and building readiness activities.

Building Security and Operations
Open, secure, and lock buildings as assigned.
Ensure windows, doors, and building access points are properly secured.
Monitor facilities and report safety concerns, vandalism, or maintenance issues.
Respond appropriately to emergency situations and facility needs.

Event and Operational Support
Set up and break down furniture, equipment, and rooms for school and community events.
Assist with deliveries, inventory, and movement of materials and equipment.
Support district operations during special events and activities.

Professional Responsibilities
Follow all district policies, procedures, safety regulations, and applicable state and federal requirements.
Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
Attend required trainings and meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Facilities Director, or Superintendent/designee.

Technology and Communication
Utilize district technology systems to support daily operations, communication, maintenance, and facility management.
Enter, update, and monitor maintenance requests using the district work order management system.
Utilize facility scheduling software to support building use, event preparation, and coordination of facility resources.
Access and respond to district email and electronic communications in a timely manner.
Maintain accurate electronic records related to maintenance activities, inspections, inventory, and facility operations.
Demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and effectively use new technologies, software applications, and operational systems as adopted by the district.

    The work environment may involve moderate to loud noise levels, depending on location and activity.
    Terms of Employment
    Salary, benefits, work schedule, and conditions of employment shall be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
    Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required state and federal background checks, including Rhode Island BCI and national fingerprint-based criminal history checks.
