Job summary

Plainfield Central Middle School is seeking a dedicated Custodian for 2nd shift to maintain a clean and safe environment for students and staff. The role requires general housekeeping, light maintenance, and timely completion of tasks, including cleaning lavatories, classrooms, offices, and common areas.

Responsibilities include waste disposal, floor care, dusting, disinfecting fixtures, snow removal, and supporting fire safety and security across the building.

Responsibilities

• Cleans designated areas: lavatories, classrooms, offices, gym, etc.

• Cleans floors (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, buffing)
• Dusted surfaces, fixtures, and walls; cleans windows and mirrors
• Maintains stairwells and common areas; disinfects as needed
• Maintains drinking fountains and replaces expendable products
• Ensures fire safety and security of the building; handles light maintenance
• Removes snow/ice and supports building upkeep as assigned

JOB DESCRIPTION: CUSTODIAN - 2nd Shift

TITLE: Custodian

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. 1. Has at least limited experience as a school custodian or theequivalent in other institutions or firms.
2. Possesses knowledge in the ability to perform the basic techniques of general housekeeping and light maintenance.
3. Reads basic operating instructions and understands and follows instructions.
4. Completes assigned tasks, and is able to run all equipment necessary to complete assigned work in a timely fashion.
5. Heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.). Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies. Manual dexterity and mobility. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

REPORTS TO: Building Administrators, Lead Custodian and Buildings and Grounds Supervisor

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Provides a clean, safe, attractive, comfortable atmosphere for students and personnel.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs general housekeeping and cleaning of the building in any designated lavatory, classroom, office, gym, etc.
2. Empties waste receptacles, recyclables and disposes of waste in proper dumpsters.
3. Cleans floor areas by sweeping, dry mopping, vacuuming, wet mopping, buffing, etc.
4. Performs other janitorial duties such as dusting window sills, moldings, cabinets, desks, paneling, walls, etc.
5. Cleans stairwells, handrails, foyers, lockers, etc.
6. Cleans lavatories and locker rooms by thoroughly scrubbing all fixtures and disinfecting every night. Also cleans and polishes mirrors and replaces all expendable products.
7. Cleans and disinfects all drinking fountains.
8. Cleans window glass in all classroom doors, entrances, offices, foyers, etc.
9. Removes spots from rugs, curtains, etc.
10. Removes graffiti from lockers, walls, desks, chairs, etc.
11. Assumes responsibility for the general fire safety and security of the building and handles light maintenance (light bulbs, tightening fixtures, etc.)
12. Removes snow and ice from walks and steps in winter months.
13. Performs other such tasks and assumes other such duties as the Administration, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds or Lead Custodian may assign from time to time.
