Location: Show Low Unified School District

Calendar: 260 days, 8 hours per day

Rate: $16.73

Position Overview

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and orderliness in school buildings and grounds. This includes performing a variety of cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, restocking supplies, and maintaining outdoor areas. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, reliable, and committed to creating a clean and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Daily Cleaning and Maintenance
    • Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, and other school areas.
    • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; dust and wipe surfaces, windows, and furniture.
    • Clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as doorknobs, light switches, and handrails.
    • Empty trash and recycling containers, replace liners, and ensure proper disposal of waste.
  • Restroom Maintenance
    • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors.
    • Restock toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other supplies as needed.
    • Monitor and address any maintenance issues in restrooms, such as clogged toilets or leaking faucets.
  • Maintain floors by sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, and polishing to keep them in good condition.
  • Assist with carpet cleaning, spot cleaning, and maintaining floor mats and rugs.
  • Use floor scrubbers and other specialized equipment for floor care as necessary.
  • Special Cleaning Projects
    • Assist with periodic deep cleaning tasks such as window washing, cleaning light fixtures, and high dusting.
    • Clean and maintain areas used for special events, including gyms, auditoriums, and multipurpose rooms.
    • Set up and break down areas for school events, meetings, and extracurricular activities.
  • General Maintenance and Organization
    • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, checking and refilling soap dispensers, and ensuring that building systems (e.g., air vents, lighting) are functioning properly.
    • Monitor and report any maintenance needs, such as broken fixtures or equipment, to the appropriate personnel.
    • Ensure that custodial storage areas and equipment are kept organized and stocked with necessary cleaning supplies.
  • Safety and Security
    • Ensure that all areas are clean and safe, identifying and addressing any hazards such as wet floors, broken glass, or uneven walkways.
    • Report safety or security issues to the supervisor or appropriate personnel.
    • Follow safety guidelines when using cleaning chemicals, equipment, and tools.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Work closely with other custodial staff, administrators, and teachers to ensure all cleaning tasks are completed as requested.
    • Assist with setting up rooms for meetings, classes, or other events as needed.
    • Communicate effectively with school staff and respond to urgent or special cleaning requests.
  • Trash and Recycling Management
    • Ensure that trash and recycling are properly sorted, disposed of, and taken to designated collection areas.
    • Maintain an organized trash and recycling schedule, ensuring bins are emptied regularly.
  • Perform minor outdoor cleaning tasks such as picking up litter, sweeping walkways, and maintaining school entrances.
  • Assist with outdoor setups for school activities and events when required.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Previous custodial or cleaning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Skills
    • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
    • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, vacuums, and carpet cleaners.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently without direct supervision.
    • Good physical stamina and ability to perform repetitive tasks.
    • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
    • Basic knowledge of safety procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Certifications
    • Valid driver's license may be required in some cases.
    • Any certifications related to cleaning or facility maintenance are a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry items for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) such as cleaning equipment, supplies, and furniture.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and tools safely.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures.
Working Conditions
  • The Custodian position is performed primarily indoors, but some tasks require outdoor work, such as sweeping and trash removal.
