Job summary

The City of Sheboygan is seeking a Custodian based at Uptown Social, the City’s Senior Center, to perform custodial maintenance such as cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, and restroom restocking. Most work is independent with occasional weekends or nights as required.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and 1+ year of related experience preferred. You may travel between City facilities; a background check may be required.

Job description

The Department of Facilities and Operations is responsible for the functions of the City’s physical spaces, including buildings, grounds and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure that these spaces are safe, comfortable, efficient, and sustainable, while also supporting the organization’s objectives. Maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities and surrounding grounds is of the upmost importance, while providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

This position performs custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning, sanitizing, and restocking restrooms in City owned facilities. Most work is performed independently. This person is expected to report to work daily as scheduled and be prepared to work at the start of the shift wearing the proper attire. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

While City Custodians are trained to clean all City facilities, this position will be based at Uptown Social, the City's Senior Center. There's some flexibility in the schedule of the position based on input from the employee as well as the needs of the department. Occasional weekends and nights may be required.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  2. Unlocks doors and ensures doors are locked after cleaning areas.
  3. Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
  4. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  5. Assists in on-the-job training of new staff.
  6. Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  7. May provide vendors/contractors with access to areas for maintenance, when notified by the director or designee.
General Responsibilities:
  1. Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  2. Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
  3. May assist or perform snow removal activities, cutting grass, and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  4. Keeps building and property in a clean and orderly condition.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possession and maintenance of valid driver’s license and auto insurance in accordance with state of Wisconsin law required. Use of personal vehicle on the job may be required for transportation from location to location.
  • One or more years of previous experience maintaining buildings and/or grounds and landscaping in a business setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, and cleaning solutions.
  • Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work with little one on one supervision as work is performed in numerous city facilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the department.

Work Environment:

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, and occasionally handle materials which may weigh up to 50 pounds. Capable of repeated standing, bending, kneeling and reaching overhead for up to ten hours per day. This position requires the ability to perform tasks related to repetitive motions with the use of the hands, legs, and back. The employee is infrequently required to work outdoors in all climatic conditions. Possibility for some exposure to disagreeable features using the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Employee is required to travel to other facilities under the City of Sheboygan. The employee is occasionally required to work evenings and long hours and be able to respond to call‑ins after normal hours. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
