Custodian
Purpose of Position: The custodian shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the school building and follow the tentative work schedule outlined by the Facilities Manager and Assistant Facilities Manager. The Custodian will also assist in the cleanliness and maintenance of the physical facility that will provide a safe, clean, and habitable environment for staff and students.
Responsibilities
- Open buildings and perform routine inspections of the entire building each day to ensure cleanliness and that all mechanical/life safety equipment is in good working order; additionally, inspect playground and grounds to ensure proper working order, reporting unsafe conditions to the building and Assistant Facilities Manager.
- Check the Metasys system to ensure all HVAC equipment is operating correctly and report any issues/concerns to the Assistant Facilities Manager.
- Set building schedules and temperature adjustments and start/stop HVAC equipment.
- Develop and maintain a basic knowledge of facility HVAC operation and controls, electrical panel locations, plumbing shutoffs, and other facility systems.
- Maintain a detailed record of all annual inspections and testing.
- Report maintenance needs to the Assistant Facilities Manager and Building Principal.
- On non‑school days, ensure the safe, efficient, and proper operation of all building equipment and systems, including securing windows and entry ways.
- Deliver supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas of the building.
- Perform basic repairs and maintenance in all trades, with assistance and training if needed (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc.).
- Be available (24/7) and able to respond to emergencies, security calls, and the need for emergency repairs.
- Work in high elevations, including but not limited to roofs, scaffolding, lifts, and ladders as needed.
- Clean cafeterias, sweep, clean tables, mop floors, pick up and empty trash as needed, and assist with the recycling program as needed.
- Check work order system and ensure work orders are addressed in a timely manner.
- Remove graffiti and clean glass areas as needed.
- Set up and break down chairs, tables, and equipment throughout the building; lift in excess of 50 pounds.
- Open and close gymnasium bleachers as needed, bending, pulling, and pushing weights in excess of 50 pounds.
- Collaborate with the Principal and other administrators to plan for and carry out any special set‑up requirements (concerts, science fairs, institutes, holiday programs, etc.).
- Possess a basic understanding of chemicals and processes used in the cleaning process.
- Receive deliveries and assist in unloading trucks, storing deliveries, and inventorying supplies (monthly supply inventory required).
- Clear snow and ice from entrances, walkways, and salt school areas.
- Occasional travel between schools, central office, and stores may be required.
- Lift cartons, boxes, and buckets weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
- Perform all work within a timely and efficient manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Facilities Manager, Facilities Manager, and the Principal.

Organizational Relationships
- Reports to Facilities Manager and/or their designee.
- Evaluated by the Facilities Manager with input from the Building Principals and in accordance with the provisions of Board Policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
Terms of Employment
- Employed to work the full twelve‑month work year.
- $18.37 per hour plus benefits.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- Certificate of good health signed by licensed physician.
- Ability to read and understand basic operating instructions.
- Demonstrates aptitude for successful completion of assigned tasks.
- Exhibits HVAC, BAS, electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry skills.
- Exhibits computer skills, including knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possesses a strong work ethic.
- Can work independently and as part of a team, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Exemplifies a customer‑service‑oriented aptitude.
- Can take initiative in all areas of responsibility.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
