Job summary

Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated janitorial/maintenance worker to perform building cleaning, general upkeep, and safety-related tasks at the Fayetteville, NC facilities. Responsibilities include cleaning, restrooms, carpet care, and assisting with moves and emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Completion of 8th grade and at least 6 months of janitorial or maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and chemicals used in custodial work.
  • Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and related tools safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety requirements related to cleaning solutions and chemicals.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid NC Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; clean glass doors/windows; sweep/mop/vacuum floors and stairs; empty wastebaskets and replenish restroom supplies.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms using established procedures.
  • Replenish supplies daily or as needed.
  • Operate and maintain power equipment and hand tools (vacuum, carpet cleaners, buffers, mops, squeegees).
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpets; empty exterior trash cans; wash walls and windows as needed.
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as required; assist courier with loading/unloading.
  • Prepare reports as requested by supervisor; attend to emergencies or spills; follow all policies and safety guidelines.
  • Assist in building security, report violations, secure doors when necessary, report issues promptly.
  • Request janitorial supplies to keep stock; report building/heating/cooling problems.
  • Perform exterior cleaning and related duties; other duties as assigned.

Job description

The major objective of this position is to perform building and grounds maintenance in order to keep the Sheriff's Office facilities clean, attractive and functioning efficiently. The employee's work should provide a clean and safe environment to customers and staff.

  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; clean glass doors/windows/stainless steel at entrances, sweep, mop, or vacuum floors and stairs; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedures.
  • Replenish supplies on a daily or as-needed basis.
  • Use, clean, and maintain power equipment and hand tools; vacuum and carpet cleaners, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles, including exterior trash cans, replace bags and dispose of trash in the proper manner.
  • Wash walls, shelves, mirrors, inside and outside windows, and equipment; inspect and maintain exterior walls and grounds from debris.
  • Use ladders when required in work assignments.
  • Handle recycling materials.
  • Assist the courier with loading/unloading supplies, equipment, and to/from the courier truck.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools as needed.
  • Prepare reports as requested by the supervisor regarding work completed.
  • Attend to emergencies or accidental spills when necessary.
  • Support all policies, Sheriff's Office, county, and government, such as Rules Governing the Use of the Sheriff's Office, OSHA, Safety, ADA, Fire, or guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining the security of the building including securing doors when found open, reporting to your supervisor or the Person in Charge any violations of policies or crimes, reporting any unauthorized occupants, and turning off lights not needed.
  • Request janitorial supplies for the location you are working to keep supplies properly stocked.
  • Report any heating or cooling system, building, or exterior problems promptly.
  • Perform exterior cleaning and related activities such as removing trash, snow, or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas around the building using appropriate tools or small power equipment when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Completion of 8th grade and 6 months of work experience including some janitorial and/or maintenance duties in an office or commercial environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to operate and clean vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform physical labor.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers effectively and courteously.
  • Ability to operate Sheriff's Office vehicles from mid-size cars to ¾ ton courier trucks in compliance with the County's Safe Driving Policy.
  • Must be able to understand and utilize basic computer skills for e-mail and complete electronic timesheets.
  • Must have access to transportation. Must have or obtain and maintain a valid NC Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Background check and Negative drug test required.
