Job summary

University of North Texas System in Dallas is seeking a Custodian to clean and maintain University buildings on the Dallas campus. This role involves applying cleaning methods, operating floor machines, and performing sanitation tasks under supervision.

The work schedule is 2:00pm-11:00pm plus Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm. The position offers full-time employment (1.0 FTE) with TRS retirement eligibility and is based at the DAL-Facilities & Gen Services department.

Qualifications

• Follow oral and written instructions and read labels on chemicals.
• Apply basic math to measure and mix chemicals.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods and safe use of cleaning equipment.
• Operate vacuum, floor waxer, buffers and related cleaning tools.
• Physical ability to stand, lift, move equipment and perform cleaning tasks.
• Identify maintenance needs and report them to supervisors.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions relevant to custodial work.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, and buff floors, hallways, and stairways.
• Clean and vacuum carpets and dust furniture, walls, ceilings, windows, and surfaces.
• Sanitize restrooms, toilets, urinals, sinks, and drinking fountains.
• Remove trash and clean waste receptacles.
• Unlock doors for events and move furniture for cleaning needs.
• Replace burned-out bulbs and transport recyclables as scheduled.
• Observe safety precautions and report issues to facilities staff.

Department Summary

The Facilities department oversees all aspects of building maintenance and infrastructure on main campus as well as our Law Center in downtown Dallas— totaling over 300,000 square-feet of conditioned space.
The department consists of two divisions: Facilities Operations and Custodial Services.

Position Overview

The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for the position of Custodian.This is cleaning work and custodial care of University buildings. Work involves the performance of cleaning and sanitation work in an assigned building or work area, and occasional special project work. Work requires the application of proper cleaning methods and materials. Employees work under general supervision of assigned supervisory staff in accordance with established routines. Work is reviewed and evaluated through inspection of work performed. Specific duties may vary depending upon the type of facility to be cleaned.

Minimum Qualifications

There are no minimum education or experience requirements. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to read and understand labels on chemicals.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts to complete tasks (example: measuring and mixing chemicals).
• Sufficient knowledge of cleaning methods and the proper use of cleaning equipment.
• Ability to operate vacuum cleaner, floor waxer, floor buffer, and other cleaning equipment.
• Physical ability to perform work involving standing, stooping, operating cleaning equipment, and lifting of materials and equipment.
• Ability to recognize and to report maintenance needs in buildings.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous custodial experience preferred.
• Work with floor machines.

Job Duties

• Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and buffs floors, hallways, and stairways.
• Cleans and vacuums carpets and rugs.
• Cleans and dusts furniture, walls, ceilings, windows, windowsills, woodwork, and other building surfaces.
• Cleans and sanitizes rest rooms, baths, commodes, urinals. lavatories, drinking fountains, and other fixtures.
• Picks up and removes trash and other waste from building and cleans waste receptacles.
• Unlocks building doors as required for building functions and programs.
• Moves furniture for cleaning purposes.
• Replaces burnedout light bulbs and fluorescent lamps.
• Transports recyclable materials to drop off point on a scheduled basis.
• Observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
• Reports building conditions and situations requiring the attention of Facility Technicians to Work Control.
