Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Clean and maintain district facilities using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

Qualifications

Preferred but not required - High school diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
• Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
• Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Cleaning

• Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
• Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.

Maintenance and Repair

• Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
• Assist in setting up facilities for special events.

Safety

• Assist with opening and closing building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
• Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours

THE COMMUNITY AND DISTRICTCovington is an incorporated community that originated as a farm and ranch community in 1855. In the early days, the community was a retail center for the area and included factories that produced almost all items needed by early day settlers. The city’s water supply comes from deep wells with large pumping capacity and has a modern septic system.The Covington Independent School District (ISD) serves a diverse population of students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 on one campus. Covington ISD is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and has been a TEA “recognized” school district two times in recent years.This 43 square mile district has a current enrollment of 330 students. The student population is 97% Anglo, 2% African-American, 27% Hispanic, 2% Asian and 3% Native American, and 1% Hawaiian/Pacific. Covington ISD is the largest employer in the district with a faculty and staff of 55 employees. Covington ISD also serves as the fiscal agent for the Hill County Shared Service Arrangement (HCSSA) that has 41 employees.
