What you will do:

The Custodial Worker I performs general and special interior cleaning, custodial duties, some exterior cleaning tasks, and minor maintenance of multiple facilities. The successful candidate will have knowledge of cleaning practices and light building maintenance.

General work duties are performed with considerable independence. Work is conducted during the evening, early morning, and/or weekends. The Custodial Worker I is regularly exposed to hazardous chemicals and must follow safety precautions related to moisture, dust, fumes, chemicals, and refuse.

  • Providing a clean and safe environment for City workers and the public is at the top of Facilities Services’ list of responsibilities. One way this is accomplished is through custodial services.   • Work involves performing interior general, some exterior cleaning task and special cleaning, custodial, and minor maintenance duties of municipal facilities. Duties include vacuuming, sanitizing restroom fixtures, emptying trash, sweeping, mopping, light bulb replacement and other similar custodial duties. General work duties are performed with considerable independence. Work is performed during evening, early morning, and/or weekends. A typical shift is from 5pm – 1:30am. Overtime may be required at times. Exposure with safety precautions to moisture, dust, fumes, chemicals, and refuse. This position is eligible for a night shift pay differential.
  • The best qualified applicants will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: knowledge of cleaning practices and light building maintenance, custodial related equipment and supplies; safety hazards, precautions and hazardous materials; ability to perform interior custodial and minor maintenance tasks without immediate supervision; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to maintain records; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces and in the operation of a variety of janitorial equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and members of the public; sufficient physical strength to withstand long working hours at custodial tasks; and dexterity to perform a variety of maintenance and cleaning tasks as listed above.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check andjob fitness assessment.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver’s license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years experience in custodial work indicating ability to perform duties with a minimum of direct supervision, including cleaning or minor maintenance and upkeep of work area, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must pass a criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance and Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
