Job summary

Montana State University’s University Student Housing seeks a Custodial Supervisor II to lead on-site custodial operations across residence halls and related facilities, ensuring safe, clean, and welcoming spaces for students and staff.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Building Services, you will supervise a large team, manage scheduling and training, monitor budgets, and coordinate with campus partners to maintain high standards throughout the academic year.

Qualifications

  • Substantial experience supervising custodial and/or light maintenance activities in a high-density housing or institutional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a diverse group of personnel including full/part-time, temporary, and/or student employees.
  • Proficient experience using computers and various software packages.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures utilized while conducting custodial work.
  • Extensive customer service experience dealing effectively with a variety of people.

University Student Housing manages 18 active on-campus communities (11 Residence Halls and 7 Apartments) which are the home of up to 6,500 residents . The Residence Life Custodial Team provides cleaning and maintenance services in and around the residence halls and associated areas. The primary emphasis is on cleaning the public areas which include restrooms, carpeted and hard-surface floor care, trash removal, room set-ups and other related duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Director of Building Services, the Custodial Supervisor II ensures the on-site supervision and coordination of custodial activities for the residence life buildings and their associated areas. This working manager position has duties including:

  • Actively supervises and directs the work of the custodial crew to ensure excellent customer service to students and building patrons.
    • Directly supervises 2 Custodial Supervisor Is and indirectly supervises the custodian team (84 during AY and up to 115 during breaks). The team is comprised of Custodians IIs, Custodian Is, student and summer/winter break staff. They lead and guide the hiring, training, performance evaluation, payroll, etc for the crew.
    • Provides and schedules ongoing professional development and training opportunities for the custodial team on equipment, industry standards, team development, and other topics as they arise.
    • Monitors staffing levels, attendance, and operational needs and adjusts assignments and resources to maintain effective coverage across assigned residence halls.
  • Oversees and directs the operational activities of the custodial team to ensure assignments are completed in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
    • Ensures safety and security of students, building patrons and staff.
    • Maintains budgetary goals and expectations.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of all equipment and infrastructure necessary to clean and maintain dense population housing facilities and associated areas.
    • Performs regular inspections of grounds and facilities to determine cleaning needs and repairs.
    • Oversees and maintains departmental standard operating procedures and conducts regular quality inspections.
    • Available to troubleshoot and solve building/facility issues.
    • Oversees all pest control efforts.
    • Maintains the yearly cleaning calendar, scheduling deep cleaning and special maintenance projects to not conflict with academic year and summer conferencing.
  • Manages the custodial equipment and inventory program to meet budget goals to include:
    • Performs all duties related to purchasing chemicals and equipment while maintaining compliance with MSU's purchasing guidelines and policies.
    • Develops and implements the short- and long-term equipment replacement plans.
    • Ensures chemicals and supplies are properly stored, labeled, and managed in accordance with applicable safety requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Collaborates regularly with partners across campus in Facilities Management, Sustainability, Culinary Services, Procurement, and various Auxiliary Services offices.
  • Researches industry innovations and forecasts needs of facilities and users.
  • Works as part of the management team on short and long range planning.
  • Performs a variety of administrative tasks in support of the department (abandon property process and follow up, ad-hoc reporting, payroll, creation and maintenance of standard operating procedures, work orders, overtime memos, assignments and schedules, etc.)
  • Oversees the custodial emergency over-time call out list and acts as a "custodian on call" as needed.
  • And actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department's mission.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Substantial experience supervising custodial and/or light maintenance activities in a commercial, institutional, high density housing, or similar setting or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a diverse group of personnel including full and part-time, temporary, and/or college aged employees.
  • Proficient experience using computers and various software packages.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures utilized while conducting custodial work.
  • Extensive customer service experience dealing effectively and diplomatically with a variety of people.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Certifications/Classes related to custodial, sanitation, building maintenance etc.
  • Experience with inventory control.
  • Experience enforcing building and security regulations.

  • Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver's license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license. If the successful candidate possesses a valid out of state driver’s license, candidate must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days.
  • Occasionally work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands.
  • Will manage the custodial over-time call out list and occasionally be in an after hours response status for immediate situations as needed.
  • Occasionally work outside and in inclement weather.

  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.
  • Routinely transport and place items weighing up to 50+ lbs, and occasionally up to 100lbs.
  • Move about or traverse grounds and facilities for long periods of time.
  • Occasionally perform cleaning duties; grip handles on cleaning equipment; ascend/descend stairs and step ladders; and be comfortable working at heights.
  • Occasionally shovel snow.
