Job summary

City of Winston-Salem seeks a semi-skilled custodian to perform cleaning and basic maintenance for City facilities. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, waxing, dusting, polishing floors, operating buffers and carpet shampooers, and handling light equipment and errands.

Must have at least seventh-grade education and some cleaning experience. Ability to read and write, understand oral and written directions, and get along with others is required. Work may be indoors or outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Perform custodial and heavy manual work in caring for City buildings.
• Sweep, mop, wax, dust, polish floors; operate buffers and carpet shampooers.
• Load/unload cleaning equipment; transport materials to job sites.
• Close and lock City buildings after late meetings.
• Wash windows and walls; tend walks and grounds; cut grass when needed.

Job description

Under immediate supervision, performs responsible semi-skilled custodial and heavy manual work in the care and cleaning of City buildings; does related work as required.

Sweeps, mops, waxes, dusts, polishes and uses buffers on floors; operates carpet shampooers; operates light automotive equipment, runs errands; closes and locks City buildings after late meetings; loads and unloads cleaning and polishing equipment and materials to be transported by truck; prepares quantities of cleaning and polishing materials appropriate for use from bulk containers; washes windows and walls; tends surrounding walks and grounds, including cutting grass and related work.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the seventh grade and some building cleaning experience.

General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to get along with others; ability to read and write.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed below):

Must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs. And maneuver up to 1 mile; must be able to work with large and small objects. This position will work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud smells and repetitive operations.
