Job summary

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a Culinary Worker II for the Worcester Dining Commons in Amherst to support daily cooking, cleaning and food service operations. This role performs routine manual duties, follows recipes and standard procedures, and helps with food preparation as needed.

The position is full-time, onsite with evening and weekend shifts. Incumbents must meet safety standards and be prepared to work under variable conditions, including hot and slippery surfaces,

Qualifications

• Incumbents must have at least six (6) months of food service experience or completion of culinary certificate program.
• Ability to cook a variety of simple meals and assist in more complex dishes.
• Ability to perform display cooking.
• Knowledge of approved sanitary methods and procedures for handling and serving food.
• Knowledge of equipment used in kitchen, dining room and food service.
• Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely and effectively.
• Ability and stamina to stand long periods, lift and carry heavy objects, and work in variable temperatures.
• Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Responsibilities

• Cook food in large quantities by following recipes and SOPs.
• May perform display cooking as assigned.
• Read recipes and menus for simple meals.
• Clean cooking equipment, work areas and utensils.
• Prepare ingredients, soups, salads, sauces and stews.
• Transport and portion food for serving.
• Assist other staff with more complex dishes.
• Perform knife work and portioning as needed.
• Ensure food quality, temperature and presentation.
• Store foods in proper storage areas.
• Communicate with team to report issues.
• M ake coffee.
• Handle trash and disposal properly.
