Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Central Supply Technician for RWJUH Somerset to support sterile processing, cleaning, sterilization and instrument prep for procedures in a fast-paced perioperative setting.

You will operate washers, sterilizers and related equipment, ensure instrument integrity, manage inventory, and collaborate with OR teams to meet daily case requirements. Certification through HSPA or CBSPD is required by NJDOH.

Qualifications

• Certification in sterile processing is required by New Jersey Department of Health.
• Current certification through HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) or CBSPD is required.
• Hands-on departmental education and ongoing training are expected.

Responsibilities

• Perform decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, inspection, assembly, packaging and sterilization of instruments and medical equipment.
• Operate instrument washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers and related equipment following policies.
• Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function and damage before assembly.
• Prepare and assemble surgical trays and case carts for procedures and OR workflow.
• Maintain proper labeling, documentation and sterilization container usage.
• Participate in inventory management to ensure timely availability of tools and supplies.
• Collaborate with OR staff and clinical teams to support patient care.
• Assist with staff onboarding and departmental education.

A typical day for a Central Supply Technician may include:

• Performing the decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment in accordance with established standards and best practices
• Operating instrument washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers, and other specialized equipment while following departmental policies and manufacturer guidelines
• Inspecting surgical instruments and equipment for cleanliness, proper function, and damage before assembly and sterilization
• Preparing and assembling surgical trays and case carts accurately to support scheduled procedures and efficient operating room workflow
• Selecting appropriate sterilization containers, wraps, and pouches based on instrument type while ensuring proper labeling and documentation
• Performing sterilizer quality assurance testing, monitoring sterilization cycles, and documenting results to verify compliance with regulatory and organizational standards
• Managing inventory levels of instruments and supplies to support uninterrupted clinical operations and timely case preparation
• Using cleaning agents, disinfectants, and sterilization chemicals safely while following infection prevention practices and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
• Collaborating with operating room staff and other clinical departments to obtain needed instruments and equipment promptly while supporting efficient patient care
• Assisting with staff orientation, on-the-job training, and departmental education while contributing to a collaborative, quality-focused work environment
