Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Analyst to provide technical guidance in ensuring fissionable material operations remain subcritical. You will collaborate with nuclear facilities, conduct technical analyses, and prepare reports.

The position is open at two levels, with varying responsibilities and salary ranges. Qualified candidates will have a background in nuclear engineering or physics, demonstrating the ability to evaluate criticality safety and train personnel.

What You Will Do

Working as a Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Analyst under the LANL NCS Program you will provide technical guidance to ensure that fissionable material operations remain subcritical under normal and credible abnormal conditions. You will interface with customers in nuclear facilities, perform technical analyses, develop logical arguments, and recommend NCS controls.

This position will be filled at either the Criticality Safety Analyst 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Criticality Safety Analyst 1

Job level 1 salary range: $96,600 – $158,000. In addition to the core responsibilities listed above, you will assist the operating organization personnel and qualified criticality safety analysts in criticality safety evaluations for new or proposed changes to existing fissionable material operations. You will help prepare and present NCS technical reports to internal stakeholders as well as external organizations such as the American Nuclear Society.

Criticality Safety Analyst 2

Job level 2 salary range: $106,400 – $176,000. In addition to level 1 duties, you will provide technical guidance on the implementation of the LANL NCS Program, lead and participate in NCS response to programmatic issues and criticality process deviations, conduct periodic reviews of fissionable material operations, participate in NCS emergency response, independently prepare and present NCS technical reports, and conduct NCS training for all levels of employees involved in fissionable material operations.

• Basic knowledge of and experience with criticality safety analysis tools such as SCALE/MCNP
• Demonstrated technical writing skills and good oral communication skills

Additional Job Requirements for Criticality Safety Analyst 2

• Prior criticality safety or related experience
• Knowledge in the discipline of NCS, including NCS evaluations, program implementation, computation tools, standards, and regulatory guidelines
• Knowledge of the ANSI/ANS 8 Series National Standards and applicable DOE Orders, Standards, and Guides
• Knowledge of the computer codes and nuclear data used for modeling and NCS analysis
• Demonstrated ability to conduct NCS evaluations on a variety of fissile/fissionable material forms
• Demonstrated experience in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting NCS
• Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of NCS to both technical and non‑technical personnel

Education / Experience

• Level 1: Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or related discipline and 2 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or related discipline and 4 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

Desired Qualifications

Criticality Safety Analyst 1

• Working to qualify as an NCS Analyst under the LANL NCS Program (ANSI/ANS 8.26 compliant)
• Experience supporting operating organization personnel in implementing the LANL NCS Program
• Experience assisting in criticality safety evaluations for new or proposed changes to existing fissionable material operations
• Experience conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting NCS
• Experience preparing and presenting NCS technical reports both internally to LANL and externally to the criticality safety community

Criticality Safety Analyst 2

• Experience providing technical guidance to operating organization personnel in implementing the LANL NCS Program
• Experience collaborating to document criticality safety evaluations for new or proposed changes to existing fissionable material operations
• Experience conducting periodic reviews of fissionable material operations
• Experience leading and/or participating in NCS response to programmatic issues and criticality process deviations
• Experience participating in NCS emergency response preparation
• Experience independently preparing and presenting NCS technical reports both internally to LANL and externally to the criticality safety community
• Experience conducting NCS training for all levels of employees involved in fissionable material operations

Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
