Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. in Herndon, VA seeks an Amazon Critical Infrastructure Engineer to lead data center projects, upgrades, and field operations.

You will own designs for capacity, availability and efficiency, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable infrastructure. The role emphasizes strong judgment, communication, and leadership, with a mix of office and field work across multiple regions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or experience working in electrical engineering field.
  • 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in Bigdata architecture and programming/scripting (Batch, VB, PowerShell, Java, C#, Chef, Perl, Ruby and/or PHP)

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
  • Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment, and event support.
  • Own the conceptual design for existing data center upgrades and design-solutions, which add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency and sustainability.
  • Interface with internal data center operations team, data center design engineering team, server hardware team, environmental health and safety team to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
  • Develop innovative solutions for AWS’s data centers.
  • Work on concurrent projects, sometimes in multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits including on-site visits within Amazon’s data centers. Produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects. Support construction, commissioning, and turnover.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or experience working in electrical engineering field
  • 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Knowledge of electrical systems in critical Data Center operations that include but not limited to utility substation feeds, transformers, switchgear, VFI Class UPS, DRUPS, PDUs, ATS, STS, SLA/VRLA batteries and associated systems, diesel/gas turbine generators and related fuel systems, Surge Suppression, Active Harmonic Filtering, battery monitoring systems, branch circuit monitoring systems or SCADA systems
  • Experience working in a data center or mission critical facility (example: hospital, military facility, public safety facility, etc.), or experience in construction
  • Experience as a resident engineer or hands‑on design consultant
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications
  • Experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, or experience in any Bigdata architecture and experience with programming/scripting (Batch, VB, PowerShell, Java, C#, Chef, Perl, Ruby and/or PHP)

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
