Overview

Critical Facilities Electrical Consultant SME - Remote / Traveler

Our client is an Engineering Design and Commissioning Company that has a national footprint and specializes in MEP critical facilities design, commissioning, consulting and management expertise in the Critical Facilities Space. They provide reliability, energy efficiency, sustainable design and LEED expertise when providing these consulting services for Enterprise, Colocation and Hyperscale Companies. Act as Critical Facilities Strategies Consultant for data center / critical facility industry. As a Master Planner / SME / Analyst, candidate should understand data center facilities operations, Electrical / Mechanical / Controls Design and Commissioning and how IT interacts within the data center facility. Since IT is constantly evolving, candidate will provide an overall strategy / master planning / consultative services / make recommendations for strategy and guidance regarding data center facility operations for their customers for both existing and proposed data centers for End Users, Owners and Operators. Customers are located primarily in the US in addition to global locations. This candidate will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) with Electrical / Mechanical Systems. The SME will also assist hedge funds and investors the ability to do due diligence if purchasing an existing data center.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret electrical one-line drawings reflecting facility electrical systems from utility to point of distribution in a mission critical space(s) (raised floor computer room)
  • Determine the loading concept of redundant systems and accurately calculate the maximum load capability based on the redundant concept presently deployed in the facility
  • Familiar with industry standard redundancy ratings and the requirements to obtain each level
  • Collect and record operational data from electrical including utility meters, electrical switchboards, circuit breakers, UPS systems, power distribution units, control panels, generators, transfer switches, and facility infrastructure metering stations
  • Analyze infrastructure designs and identify them down to component levels for purposes of categorizing and identifying typical mission critical facility design approaches as practiced in the industry
  • Possess basic reliability concepts of redundancy, Mean Time Between Failure, Mean Time To Repair, availability, reliability, maintainability, concurrent maintainability, downtime, as they apply to electrical systems employed to develop highly reliable facility infrastructures
  • Assess the condition and success of maintenance processes employed on UPS systems, UPS high power battery systems, Power Distribution Units (PDU) and all ancillary equipment providing conditioned power in mission critical buildings
  • Evaluate the condition of and maintenance processes employed in operating and maintaining electrical distribution systems including transformers, switches, switchgear, bus ducts, power cabling and power distribution units
  • Evaluate and assess the condition and maintenance processes employed for high availability standby power systems including generators, flywheels, transfer switches and static transfer switches
  • Identify adverse energy usage patterns and practices in facility infrastructure equipment and recommend viable strategies to reduce energy consumption related to the findings identified
  • Perform base power calculations from observed or supplied data: i.e., power (in kilowatts), cooling (in tons or kilowatts), KVA, power factors, power per area (watts per square foot or meter)
  • Identify single points of failure in mission critical electrical infrastructure systems and recommend valid risk mitigation steps to minimize the impact from a failure at the identified points
  • Develop critical facilities maintenance staffing plans and skill requirements
  • Operate and evaluate the building monitoring and control systems employed to manage mission critical mechanical and electrical infrastructure systems and components
  • Assess the condition of raised floor areas in data centers following a checklist provided in a detailed and consistent manner.
  • Possess a complete understanding of Emergency Power Off (EPO) systems and the functions there of
  • Follow written and verbal instructions (SOPs / MOPs) relating to technical materials and presentations
  • Identify, define and explain reliability factors that impact data center availability and synthesize recommendations to improve infrastructure reliability in a cost-effective manner
  • Evaluate and assess security systems employed in mission critical facilities including perimeter systems, video systems, card access, biometric access, room level to rack level protection
  • Evaluate maintenance management process and/or systems in use to ensure proper maintenance management
  • Evaluate change management process and/or systems in use
  • Evaluate the overall facility and provide input to such in the planning sessions and workshops
  • Work with Engineering/Design colleagues, assist in the development of conceptual designs for infrastructure expansion and/or capacity changes.
  • Complete understanding redundancy requirements and Tier levels
  • Evaluate the overall critical loading requirements for data center “greenfield” options
  • Provide ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) estimates (+/- 30%) for recommendations
  • Present findings and interact with customers at all levels – C-Level to Engineer / Tech Level
  • Communicate in a professional manner: effectively, and persuasively in solid verbal and written form to client CIO/CFO/COO’s and other senior positions.
  • Participate as an industry expert in symposiums, professional journals, and webinars such as Uptime Institute, IEEE, 7x24 Exchange, DCD, Bisnow, iMasons, PTC, Datacenter Frontier, etc.)
  • Manage Project Delivery:
    • Act as the client partner and project executive for all projects they develop.
    • Manage the project, quality, and the client as a portfolio over time
    • Participate in delivery and will need to learn the use of the group’s analytic tools and support that need as required
    • Manage the project to the forecast financial measures
  • Assist in the development of financial analysis results to allow the client to understand the financial impact, over time, of potential solutions
  • Ability to analyze / determine redundancies, loads, etc. while following industry best practices
  • Safely work in facility infrastructure spaces without injury to self or others

Qualifications:

  • Applicable data center professional certifications
  • 10 Years + data center operational experience in Hyperscale / Colocation / Enterprise facilities
  • BA/BS from an accredited College/University with Engineering or Computer Science degree a plus
  • Knowledgeable in skills required to correctly interpret a mechanical one-line drawing reflecting facility HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) systems typically employed in mission critical facilities from central mechanical cooling to computer room air conditioner (or air handling unit)
  • Must be fully competent in the skills required to correctly Interpret electrical one-line drawings reflecting facility electrical systems from utility to point of distribution in a mission critical space(s) (raised floor computer room) including utility meters, electrical switchboards, circuit breakers, UPS systems, power distribution units, control panels, generators, transfer switches, and facility infrastructure metering stations
  • Fully familiar with electrical grounding systems along with a basic understanding of lightening protection systems.
  • Knowledgeable in the requirements of the National Electrical Code
  • IT Architecture Familiarity: Knowledge of basic IT hardware including servers (enterprise and high performance), network, cloud services and storage devices.
  • Client Facing with all levels of the business – C level to technician
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal (this role requires heavy amount of writing, documentation, and client interaction)
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Basic financial analysis techniques and accounting principles such as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) methodologies, Cash Flow models, and CAPEX and OPEX budgeting.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time (otherwise work from home) might be times when sustained travel over short periods of time are required, particularly when supporting our global clients
  • Must live 60-90 minutes from a major airport
  • Previous experience in the Military / Military veterans in all branches that have experience with Electrical / Mechanical is a huge plus (Navy Nukes- EMN, ETN, MMNs, Seabees, Army - Power Generation, Air Force – Power Production, Generator Techs, Maritime, Coast Guard, etc.)
