NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is seeking a compassionate Peer Counselor to join the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and Mobile Crisis Team. The role emphasizes recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and person-centered peer support for individuals experiencing psychiatric crisis, rotating between hospital-based CPEP and community responses.

The position requires a High School Diploma or GED, and NYS Peer Specialist certification (or ability to obtain within one year).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• NYS certification as a Peer Specialist or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
• Experience in psychiatric emergency services or mobile crisis programs is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide peer support to individuals presenting to CPEP or served by the Mobile Crisis Team under supervision of licensed staff.
• Respond to psychiatric crises in community settings including private residences, shelters, street outreach locations, and other public settings.
• Assist individuals in navigating the psychiatric emergency system and explain processes in accessible language.
• Participate in de-escalation and engagement efforts consistent with trauma-informed practices.
• Assist with discharge planning and linkage to community resources and follow-up care.
• Provide post-crisis follow-up outreach and connections to outpatient mental health and social services.
