Job summary

Western State Hospital is seeking a full-time Crisis Prevention Officer to maintain safety and milieu management for residents and staff, provide therapeutic and physical interventions, and respond to emergencies while upholding a positive safety culture on each shift.

The role emphasizes de-escalation, professional patient interaction, and collaboration with clinical teams to maintain a secure, therapeutic environment at the Staunton campus.

Qualifications

• Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and ability to obtain Virginia driver's license within 30 days of start date.
• Experience in law enforcement, corrections, psychology, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Responds in a professional and therapeutic manner to incidents and emergencies as trained.
• Conducts unit walk-throughs to maintain a safe and secure environment for patients and staff.
• Responds to emergencies (fire, disaster, duress) and assists as needed.
• Conducts searches on units as required.
• Escorts residents safely to destinations within the facility.
• Responds to all Code calls on forensic units.
• Completes documentation and submits to supervisor within required timeframe.
• Demonstrates dependability in attendance and punctuality.
• Demonstrates negotiation skills to de-escalate challenging patient behaviors.
