Job description

The mission of the Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA) is to protect our most vulnerable citizens and help safeguard the state's Medi-Cal program. DMFEA prosecutes healthcare providers who defraud the Medi-Cal program and those who abuse or neglect elderly and dependent adults residing in long-term care facilities.

The DMFEA Supervising Deputy Attorney General (SDAG) is a working supervisor within the Criminal Prosecutions Section who organizes, monitors, collaborates with, and directs a team of attorneys, paralegals, and others in the criminal investigation and prosecution of Medi-Cal fraud and abuse or neglect of elders and dependent adults. The SDAG’s duties include:

  • Overseeing the legal work of Deputy Attorneys General (DAG), including litigation strategy, filing decisions, plea bargaining, written work product, and other case-related work;
  • overseeing the duties and work of legal support staff, including legal secretaries and legal analysts;
  • personally performing the most difficult, complex, and sensitive legal work, including appearing before state and federal courts;
  • facilitating and personally handling interactions with the Division’s investigative supervisors and staff;
  • engaging with public stakeholders and state, federal, and local agency partners on behalf of DMFEA;
  • assessing legislative measures and other policy proposals in the Division’s subject areas;
  • handling general administrative tasks;
  • participating in the selection process for staff;
  • providing training for legal and investigative staff; and
  • evaluating and responding as appropriate to the performance of supervised staff.

Within the Division’s multi-disciplinary vertical prosecution teams, the SDAG is responsible for facilitating effective communication and collaboration between legal, investigative, and law enforcement staff, which includes participating in regular case review meetings and actively liaising with supervisorial and management staffs who oversee investigative and administrative personnel.
