Brooklyn Defender Services seeks an attorney to join the Women’s Defense Project in the Criminal Defense Practice in Downtown Brooklyn. The role focuses on helping clients obtain relief under New York's START Act, drafting START motions, and coordinating with a paralegal to identify eligible past and current clients.

The attorney will interview clients, gather documentation, file motions with prosecutors and courts, and participate in citywide START working groups.

Competenze

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
• Admitted to practice in New York, or ability to become admitted.
• At least one year of legal experience, criminal defense or work with gender-based violence survivors.
• Self-starter with willingness to learn post-conviction relief.
• Compassionate, resourceful, and able to build trust with clients under pressure.
• Strong writing and legal research skills.

Mansioni

• Identify past and current clients eligible for START relief.
• Work with the WDP paralegal to develop outreach tools for START relief.
• Interview clients and gather documentation for START motions.
• Draft and submit START motions to prosecutors and courts.
• Accompany clients to proffer sessions as needed.
• Participate in citywide START working groups.
• Other duties as assigned.
