Job summary

City of Ardmore seeks a qualified crime scene investigator to evaluate scenes, collect and organize evidence, and prepare detailed reports for analytical review and court testimony.

You will testify as an expert witness on findings and processing methods, and maintain comprehensive case files facilitating investigative workflow. State certification and a degree in forensic science or related field are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in a Science forensic field, Criminal Justice or Police Science
  • Associated Degree in criminal justice, police science, or science field with 3–5 years of forensic experience

Job description

Evaluates crime scenes and collects and organizes information used in the analysis of crime trends. Prepare detailed reports on the activities at the crime scene and the findings of evidence examinations. Testifies as an expert witness in court regarding the findings of evidence and testifies as expert witness on the findings and processing methods used at the crime scene.

Essential Functions
  • Investigate crime scenes at any hour of the day or night, under any weather conditions; survey crime scene and formulate a plan of procedure.
  • Prepare detailed report of investigations, and maintain records and case files of all evidence and information acquired.
  • Give expert testimony in criminal court. Testimony must follow the rules of evidence, but must also explain in laymen’s term, to a jury, the significance of the evidence as it relates to scientific proof.
  • Analyze data and prepare daily, weekly, monthly, annual and special reports based on data for review by command officers.
  • Submit fingerprints to O.S.B.I. for submission into the AFIS fingerprint database; also making fingerprint identifications
  • Prepare daily information reports to be discussed in shift briefings.
  • Provide information to outside law enforcement agencies on method and patterns, trends, and suspect correlations.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to acquire skills and knowledge in the fields of science, anatomy, and forensics as they apply to criminal investigations; also knowledge of police terminology and records.
  • Ability to learn safe operations of handling equipment, and knowledge of departmental policies, procedures and relations.
  • Skills in collection of organization of data and the ability to prepare for testimony in a criminal court case.
  • Knowledge of how to set up and maintain accurate files and records in both crime analysis and crime scene.
  • Knowledge of computer language, computer keyboards, and related equipment.
  • Must be familiar with investigative techniques, and local, state and federals laws.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and accomplish daily tasks.
Education
  • State Certified High School diploma or GED
  • Bachelor Degree in a Science forensic field, Criminal Justice or Police Science, or
  • Associated Degree in criminal justice, police science, or science field along with 3-5 years of specialized forensic experience
Requirements
  • Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License
