Job summary

The City of Murfreesboro, TN is seeking a Crime Data Analyst Supervisor in the Police Department's Operations Division. This safety-sensitive role supervises analysts, directs complex research, and creates reports and maps to reveal crime trends for the City and law enforcement partners.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Data Science, or related field with at least two years’ crime data analysis experience and leadership ability.

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a Crime Data Analyst.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Data Science, or related field required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct crime analysts; plan, instruct, assign duties and evaluate performance.
  • Lead complex crime analysis research projects and disseminate findings.
  • Serve as liaison for statistical data, crime patterns, and trends for City and agencies.
  • Produce maps and reports to identify trends and geographic activity.
  • Develop training materials; guide analysts in analytical techniques and dissemination.
  • Communicate with City staff, other agencies, and the public; provide briefings as needed.

Job description

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Supervise and direct the actions of a group of crime analysts engaged in gathering, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating statistical data relevant to crime, crime patterns, intelligence, and crime trends. This position operates within the Operations Division of the Police Department.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, instructs, and assigns duties to subordinates, provides leadership, and evaluates job performance.
  • Participates in, and completes, highly technical and complex crime analysis related research projects and work.
  • Serves as the facilitator of information regarding statistical data relevant crime, crime patterns, and crime trends for the City and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Supervises Crime Analysts to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures.
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities associated with crime analysis unit which includes maintaining, administering, and implementing of standard operating procedures, quality assurance standards.
  • Collects, collates, analyzes, disseminates, evaluates crime data, and creates reports/bulletins to identify trends, patterns, and changes in criminal activity.
  • Produces computer generated maps to display criminal activity geographically throughout the City.
  • Facilitates the transfer of crime information between analyst, units, sections, and divisions.
  • Creates, prepares, and uses training materials to enhance the capabilities of new and current crime analysts. Guides analysts in using analytical techniques on assigned projects or in developing recommendations for disseminating intelligence products.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and working relationships with City employees, representatives of other agencies and the public.
  • Educates the public and law enforcement personnel on crime trends and prevention through presentations, training courses, develop reading material and websites.
  • Provides briefings at Executive and Supervisory staff meetings.
  • Maintains the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information obtained or reviewed.
  • Attends public meetings or other meetings as assigned.

Physical Demands
  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Crime Data Analyst.
  • Prior experience in a leadership role preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Data Science, or related field required.
