To serve as lead worker over a crew of maintenance personnel performing work in the construction, maintenance and repair of City facilities; to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment for the performance of assignments on a regular basis. Positions at this level of responsibility assume the most difficult and responsible type of duties assigned to classes within this series including lead supervision over subordinate staff and skill operation of equipment on a regular and on-going basis. Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
- Serve as crew leader over subordinate personnel; provide functional and technical guidance to subordinate staff.
- Assist in planning job assignments; explain job specifications on job site.
- Ensure that all established safety practices and regulations are observed while work is performed.
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment including backhoe, trencher, Bob Cat loader, air compressor, grinder, pumps, and line locator.
- Respond to service calls concerning emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; perform overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain proper functioning order.
- Inspect and clean storm inlets; construct and rebuild inlets; repair inverts in inlet floors and other problems.
- Perform maintenance on assigned City vehicle; maintain proper fluid levels; report the need for any major repairs.
- Participate in selection of staff as requested; provide staff training as necessary; evaluate employee performance as required; and work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Attend and participate in supervisory training as necessary or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- General construction methods and practices.
- Location of various City streets and addresses.
- Techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
- Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
- Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
- Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.
- Principles and practices of performing employee performance assessments.
Ability to:
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Learn the location of various City streets and addresses.
- Learn the techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
- Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
- Perform the physical requirements of the job
- Perform work in undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination.
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
- Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and implement discipline procedures.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years of work experience operating various equipment and supervisory skills over Street Department crew.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
Must have ability to obtain Class A or B CDL within six (6) months of request when requested by supervisor.

- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
- Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
- Occasionally works in high, precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
