Job description

Our mission at FHLBank Chicago: To partner with our members in Illinois and Wisconsin to provide them competitively priced funding, a reasonable return on their investment, and support for their community investment activities.

Simply said, we're a bank for banks and other financial institutions, focused on being a strategic partner for our members and working together to reinvest in our communities, from urban centers to rural areas. Created by Congress in 1932, FHLBank Chicago is one of 11 Federal Home Loan Banks, government sponsored in support of mortgage lending and community investment.

What it’s like to work here

At FHLBank Chicago, we bring people together. We are committed to a high performing, engaged workforce, and to supporting the communities we serve across Illinois and Wisconsin. Our Buddy Program pairs new hires with tenured employees to guide their onboarding. Our professional development and training opportunities through upskilling, mentorship programs, and tuition reimbursement allow employees to grow their career with us. Our collaborative, in-office operating model brings teams together to foster innovation, connection, and shared success. To support balance and flexibility, employees are provided with an allocation of remote days to use as needed throughout the year.

What you’ll do

The Credit Analyst, Depository supports the evaluation and ongoing monitoring of credit risk associated with depository member institutions. Working under the guidance of the Manager and more experienced team members, the analyst reviews financial and regulatory information, prepares recurring credit surveillance, contributes to risk-rating and credit-limit recommendations, and helps identify developments that may affect a member’s credit profile. The role is designed for an analyst who has a solid foundation in financial analysis and is ready to deepen expertise in financial institutions, credit risk, and the FHLBank System.

How you'll make an impact

Help protect the Bank by monitoring the financial condition and credit risk of depository member institutions through ongoing analysis of financial, regulatory, and market information.

Partner with cross-functional teams to support risk-rating assessments, member reviews, credit decisions, and portfolio reporting that inform business and risk management activities.

Build specialized expertise in depository institution credit analysis while gaining exposure to senior leadership, member interactions, and key risk management decisions.

What you can expect

Analyze financial statements, regulatory reports, peer information, and other relevant data for depository institutions, with coaching on more complex or higher-risk situations.

Prepare accurate and timely quarterly credit summaries, surveillance reports, and supporting analysis in accordance with established procedures and templates.

Monitor assigned institutions for changes in earnings, capital, asset quality, liquidity, funding, market conditions, management, and other factors relevant to creditworthiness.

Assist with periodic risk-rating assessments and credit-limit recommendations by organizing evidence, documenting analytical conclusions, and escalating questions or inconsistencies.

Support new-member reviews, special reviews, and targeted analyses by gathering information, completing assigned sections, and coordinating follow-up items.

Maintain complete, well-supported credit files and ensure source data, assumptions, and conclusions are clearly documented.

Participate in member calls and internal discussions; prepare questions, capture key takeaways, and complete assigned follow-up analysis.

Track macroeconomic, industry, and regulatory developments affecting depository institutions and summarize potential implications for the portfolio.

Partner with Credit Risk, Collateral, Member Transaction Desk, Solutions, and other stakeholders to resolve data questions and support consistent risk decisions.

Contribute to portfolio reporting, process improvements, data-quality checks, and automation or analytical enhancements as skills develop.

Adhere to applicable policies, standards, procedures, internal controls, and confidentiality requirements.

Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

What you’ll bring

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, risk management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Approximately two or more years of relevant experience in credit analysis, financial analysis, banking, audit, risk management, accounting, or a related analytical field. Strong internships, rotational assignments, or directly relevant coursework may be considered as part of the overall experience profile.

Foundational ability to interpret financial statements and connect income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow, capital, liquidity, and asset-quality trends.

Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize analysis and explain the basis for a conclusion.

Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, and commitment to accurate documentation.

At ease working within a team-based environment.

Time management and an ability to display initiative are necessary.
