Job summary

Qualifications

Job Title: Crating Clerk
Department: Operations
Reports To: Logistics Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Crating Clerk is responsible for preparing finished products, components, and materials for shipment by constructing, assembling, and preparing crates, pallets, and protective packaging in accordance with customer requirements, company standards, and shipping specifications. This position plays a critical role in ensuring products are packaged securely, accurately, and efficiently to prevent damage during transit while supporting on-time delivery objectives.

Working closely with Production, Shipping, Warehouse, Quality, and Customer Service teams, the Crating Clerk ensures shipments are properly packaged, labeled, documented, and staged for domestic and international transportation while maintaining a safe and organized work environment. Must have prior experience operating a circular saw, table saw, impact driver, nail guns, and other carpentry tools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Construct, assemble, and modify wooden crates, skids, pallets, and other protective packaging for finished products and materials in accordance with customer specifications and shipping requirements.
  • Prepare products for shipment by measuring, packaging, bracing, banding, labeling, and verifying materials to ensure safe and damage-free transportation.
  • Review work orders, packing lists, shipping documents, and product specifications to ensure shipment accuracy and completeness.
  • Inspect completed crates and packaged products for quality, accuracy, and compliance with shipping standards.
  • Stage, load, and secure shipments for domestic and international transportation as required.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through proper material identification, handling, documentation, and participation in cycle counts and annual physical inventories.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, stretch-wrap machines, banding equipment, forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment as authorized.
  • Identify opportunities to improve packaging methods, reduce waste, increase efficiency, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Report damaged materials, packaging concerns, inventory discrepancies, or shipment issues to supervision and assist in resolving problems.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Shipping, Production, Warehouse, Quality, and Customer Service teams to support operational goals and on-time customer deliveries.
  • Provide support for additional warehouse, shipping, inventory, and manufacturing activities as business needs require, including overtime when necessary.
Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Vocational training or related carpentry experience preferred.
Experience
  • Experience with a circular saw, table saw, impact driver, nail guns and other carpentry tools, required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in carpentry preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts and material handling equipment preferred.
  • Experience reading work orders, packing lists, and shipping documentation preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, measuring devices, and packaging equipment.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including measuring and calculating dimensions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with shipping or ERP systems preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools frequently.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing and warehouse environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment when authorized.
